I am sure this has been posted before, but I am new. I just purchased a 68 Camaro no motor no trans. I found out it was British Green with a white top and black houndstooth deluxe interior. Still had the original tail lights so I know its not a R/S. But it does have a 12 bolt with posi. it does not have disk brakes but it was a v-8 car with a 4 speed. After that I am stumped what tranny would it have and motor any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Not having Factory Disc.s on a 1968 rules out it originally being a 'Z' - but does not preclude it from being any of the other V-8 models.

Best indicator at this point may be the hole for the speedo cable from the trans.
Since you "know" it was a 4-speed, the location will tell you if it was a Muncie or a Saginaw ;)
A Muncie hole location would open the door to exploring for other SS type options to help narrow the original engine installation.
So would the 12-bolt axle ... unless it's some real odd-ball ratio ;)
Decode of the axle, if original, could also help narrow the engine type most likely installed at the factory.

Look here - http://www.camaros.org/options.shtml#id - for speedo hole location info and tons of other great decode info

Yeah, you really need to know where the speedo cable enterted the cabin to tell if it'a an L30/M20, SS or other V8 car.

Post the first 5 or 6 digits of the VIN and we can verify that it was a V8 car.

Also, where do the heater hoses go into the heater box?

Is there a plate on the left side rear frame rail for dual exhaust hanger?

Its a 68 he's talking about so that hanger plate wont be there, it was a 69 only thing.

Is the 12-bolt original?
Have/can you get the numbers from it and decode?
This will narrow the two possible engines at this point.
It's definitely a small block car though ...
It should also be multi-leaf springs.

As far as the dual exhaust hangars;
As Jim said, there is no re-enforcement plate on the frame rail, just the two holes.
But ... there will also be another hanger, or evidence of one (holes), under the car in the area forward and above the rear axle on the drivers side (that matches the passenger side one) for the duals.
All SS and the L30 could have duals. (edit)
Dual could also be ordered on a 327/210, but then the axle would most likely not be a 12-bolt on a 2-bbl 210.

Right, plate is 69 only. But the 68 dual exhaust cars got rivnuts.

Check this link for more info. See section on dual exhaust

The transmission information is right above the dual exhaust section in regards to firewall holes. John is right. Not a Muncie.

Matt, I just went through this with my 68.

Get the rearend information. Then we can go from there.

You will also want to check this link to see if you have a Rear Brake Line Pressure Regulator Valve.

How do ya know it originally wasn't a 3 spd ?

Standard L30 had single exhaust, duals optional.
You're right - I typed that wrong and meant it to say 'All SS and the L30 could have dual and a 12-bolt' ... but changed the wording while typing reply
Basicly trying to point out it could be narrowed down to one of these two ;)
I have edited it :)

No biggy John, I know tryin to do detective work on a 68... and expain it, gets kinda mind boggling @ times. You'll notice I never take a lead role...just fill in the gaps..lol

Matt, One thing for sure, the British Green/White top and 749 interior sounds like a nice combo....and 12 Bolt to boot. I'm curious if it's original also ?

And a few pics of some ZZ Green cars....

Well there's always that, and the fact that I'm trying to do it from memory most of the time - and I'm old ...

Also I checked and it does have matching holes by the rear leaf springs.
Sounding fairly likely that it was either an L48 or L30 at this point.
Probably no surefire way to find out which depending on previous work and mods done to the car.
I'm be on the lookout for trim diferences, tire size, axle ratio's and the like to help narrow the choice of what it 'may' have been

Matt,

Did you check the glove compartment door for a sticker that shows tire size?

Document everything you take off the car with photos so youi have some sort of proof if you decide to sell it one day.
