Ok, guys, don't start jumping on me, I have been away from cars since I sold my 67 to buy a house in 1974. I have never gotten involved in message boards, chat etc. so this is a learning experience for me. I just retired and bought a 68 with a built 383. I am wondering about total timing on this engine. I have the following in the engine:\
220 Mo-town heads with 2.08 and 1.60 valves
Lunati roller with 565 intake and 585 exhaust
1.5 roller rockers
Performer intake with 650 Holley dual pumper
3800 stall, power glide with transbrake and manual shift.
3:73 gears.
I plan to change out the transmission to something more streetable. I only plan to do some fun racing at the local track (Beech Bend) in Bolwing Green, KY
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Two important things are cam duration and compression ratio (octane being used too).

On my 383 with 242/256 duration at .05 and 62x/62x lift. I am not using a vacuum advance because of the cam.

I think I am around 18-20 initial and 40 total. I need to go a little more total timing up top, with a large duration cam and lopey idle. I would just use mechanical advance and do something similar.

You are probably going to end up somewhere between 32 and 34* total. Every 383 I've had, has liked that the best.

That engine will want more carb than that as well.
I.m with Royce here^.The more efficient the head chamber..the less total timing reqd to complete the burn and negate pre tdc negative piston work.

Agree,..with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged, set the mechanical timing to 34 degrees at 3000 RPM and let the initial timing fall where it falls,..probably around 18 degrees.

Also when asking for "total" timing recommendations it can be confusing. Some believe "total" advance includes vacuum advance,..some (most) believe "total" timing only refers to mechanical advance.

FWIW

I was wondering about the carb thing. I took the one I have to Quick Fuel Tec. in Bowling Green and they went through it, and flowed it, ran it in on their test engine. May have to bump the size up somewhat.
Thanks

People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.

Roller cam and 220 Motown heads with a Performer intake?

I would add a 1" open spacer under the carb if you're not already using one.

I will check into that, I have a cowel hood and with 14" K&N was hitting the hood on the side. I purchased an offset base and moved the filter foward about an inch, that solved that problem. I will check the clearance from the top of the filter to the hood.
Thanks,
Gene
