Haven't been on in a while...soccer has taken over. However, my son's lumina has decided to quit. No acceleration when applying the gas pedal. Any suggestions? Can't get the car to run at all. Won't start. Starter will have to be replaced, but did not cause the non acceleration problem that I know of.

Marybeth - I agree with William ... we need much more info to even try to steer you to the issue :yes:
* If the key is turned to the 'start' position does the engine crank (turn the starter to rotate the crankshaft) or does anything happen?
* Was the car running and then stopped or did he go out one morning and it didn't start?
* Has the "Check Engine" light been on before this started?
* Do you have a friend with a SCAN tool to do a quick download of conditions?

Answers to some of the above can help us make suggestions, but finding the bad component can be a challange even with the proper tools ...
BTW - many local auto parts houses will rent many of the necessary tools and equipment to do most of these checks and diagnosis - some will even do the tests for you, b-u-t ... you have to get the car to them first ...

Havent done much with it. Soccer rules our lives 6 days a week. He stopped at a traffic light. When the light turned green he stepped on the accelorater and nothing happened. We tried to start it but the starter just whines. No back pressure in the radiator hoses, meaning I could squeeze them easily. We were able to turn engine over before starter went out.

Starter may have failed due to all your cranking of the engine ...

If engine was 'running' and then quit, look for electrical issue with ignition or injection system.
Once starter is working (replaced);
Try squirting a small amount of fuel into intake a see if engine tries to start or does for a few secounds - if it does, then problem is 'fuel' ... injectors are not firing or getting fuel to them.
* test fuel pressure - should be at or near factory spec.
* Test injector signal/operation with NOID light (can be rented at auto parts store) - flashing or cycling of the NOID will show if injectors are getting voltage to work
If squirting fuel does not seem to help engine want to start then ignition is most likely cause;
* check one or more of the plugs for spark - you should see a good spark/snap at gap if ignition is okay

Don't forget to check the "IGN" and "INJ" fuses in the panel as well as all other engine related ones - look for information and location in the owners manual.

Let us know what you find :yes:
