I ordered a quart of 20-71 Blacl Onyx Zolatone to shoot my trunk with. What I'll be covering is a new center trunk pan with a fair amount of the e-coat left on it, some body filler, lots of bare metal, and some of the old trunk spatter I can't reach to remove.

I also ordered a quart of DP90 black epoxy primer as a basecoat.

I have never used anything but rattle cans to spray paint with in my life, so this'll be a first for me. I have 2 spray guns - both HF specials - to shoot paint with. One is a HPLV gravity feed gun with a 1.5mm tip. The other is a LVLP siphon gun with a 2.0mm tip. My compressor delivers 11.0 CFM @ 90PSIG & 12.5 CFM @ 40 PSIG. The tank is 60 gal.

Any and all advice is much appreciated, even down to simplest step as mixing the primer or what type respirator to use. I am a total NOOB at this and a bit nervous.

Thanks in advance!!

In the 70's it was popular to zolatone the trunk area. There were several color patterns. I rattle-canned several trunks in my day. It is important to prime against rust before shooting zolatone. I believe zolatone was first targeted to shoot interiors of fiberglass boats. Have fun.

I did some research on Zolatone some time ago. If I remember correctly it was one of the first products used to spray trunks. Can't offer any advice on how to spray as I was unable to locate a source to buy when I was looking for it.

I used the LVLP 2.0 tip HF gun you have. Worked great. As others have said prime and seam seal first then have at it. One thing to be aware of that the stuff is VERY odorous. If possible only do it when you can have a garage door open or even better roll it outdoors for the day. Odor will emit for 1-2 weeks....so plan ahead. Stuff hardens in a few hours....just lots of odor. Good luck

I don't remember the gun pressure ....and the above tech sheet probably tells you. Don't use 1.5 tip for sure....2.0 is barely big enough. Its kind of like spraying pudding..but I do like the look and it is hard stuff.

I would prime first. I use a pressure pot gun setup for best results. It takes me a little over 2 qts to do a trunk. When done well nothing is tougher or looks better.
Wow is that a picture of th Zolatone? I have never even heard of it before. What is the difference between Zolatone and Trunk Spatter paint? Also can you get spatter paint for a spray gun or only in spray bomb?

I don't know how accurately Zolatone replicates the factory appearance, but in this thread a product sold does. If originality is your objective. Aerosols are not capable of providing the correct finish. http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=7350.0

I work for a custom truck body and trailer manufacturer (www.itb.ca) and we use zolatone in all of our external compartment interiors. Great stuff for sure! What color is correct for the trunk?
I'm using 20-71 Onyx Black which is supposedly the closest of the standard Zolatone colors. It's not exact but I don't care...

These guys have some custom mixes that supposedly match original, but it's more dough plus shipping. I got mine locally for $41/qt. http://www.tcpglobal.com/autobodydepot/trunkfinish.aspx
