I have a 1986 305 TPI from an 86 Camaro in my truck. Has run great untill Satutday when at GOOD GUYS car show sittting in line it died. Starts back up but would not idle unless you gave it gas, made it home but had to hold accelerator peddle a little to keep it running, ran fine on the highway home but would not idle at stop lights. Once I got home and pulled into garage it worked fine ??? I did notice my inline fuel pump was noisey and the fuel line coming out of the pump was vibrating, I replaced filters a week ago and it ran fine untill this. Could a faulty fuel pump cause it to not idle but run fine on highway or should I check the TPS and IAC sensors. . I have a new fuel pump ordered don't like the intermitent noisy pump. Thanks for the help

Put vacuum gauge on engine and it held steady not jumpimg around even when I raised rpm. No egr valve on engine it's a swap into a 1950 Ford F1 truck. Checked TPS it was ok, ckecked fuel pressure it was ok. My fuel pump making a racket seems intermitet thats why I was going to change it. Ran fine on today while testing. I wonder if I might have some bad gas ? I filled up prior to leaving sat morning.

Could be bad gas, but, ECM, I think, would make up for it.
If faulty pump, it would be running funny at all rpms, maybe. TPI requires 40+ PSI. Pump should run smooth.
If stock cam, vacuum would be around 18 inches at idle.
I would check coolant sensor and its wiring. Could be faulty and telling ECM its cold and ECM over fueling at idle and not notice it at higher rpms. Coolant sensor across its two terminals at operating temp would be under 200 ohms with connecotr unplugged.
Have ALDL connector? If so, short pins A & B together, turn ign sw to IGN and count flashes of SES light - flash, space, flash, flash is code 12, ECM is okay. Very first flash is bulb check of SES light. First set of flashes is first number of code, then second set is second number. There is a OBD I DTC chart using the search engine, ie, flash flash, flash space flash flash flash is code 33, and so on.
Each code will flash 5 times, then after reaching the last code, ECM repeats starting with 12.
