350 oil pump please help

Have a fresh rebuilt 350 chevy
Tried installing my distributor today and it wont go down all the way.
Got a flashlight, looked down the dizzy hole and noticed the oil pump shaft is real loose. tried to turn the oil pump with a long screwdriver and it only turns 3/4 of a turn then locks up, turn it back and locks up the other way. Do i need to pull the pan and remove the oil pump or can i do something without pulling the pan.

When u installed the pump.. Are you sure it engaged the pump drive shaft..

I would suggest pulling the pan and seeing whats up.You should be able to rotate the pump shaft all the way around without locking up. And yes it will seem somewhat loose.

Well. Got under there and pulled the pan. Found the actuall pump was locking up so that is what was pushing the dizzy up. Took the pump apart and the lube that was used actually harde
ned and was not letting the gears mesh when it was spinning. Must have been on the shelf for a while as it was new. Ended up buying a new one.
