Haven't done one on a first gen, so maybe I'm wrong, but don't think the axle needs to be removed. Spin it around to see if there's room enough for the stud to come out. Worst case, you may need to remove the brake shoes/hardware. Then a thump with a BFH should be all that's needed. I'd use 2 hammers, one held on the stud and the other to do the thump! Draw the new stud on with washers or an oversize nut and a lugnut.
if your putting stock length studs in it - knock them out and use backwards lug nuts with washers to pull them in. you will have to pull the axles to put 3" studs in if not do them in the car
The above mentioned suggestions will work with OE length studs up to 1/4 inch longer studs, I agree.
However, if replacing with longer studs, you can holesaw a 1" hole in the backing plate to gain access.
Thanks all. I usually don't ask for help but with a McGyver bunch of TC'ers, it can be most advantageous. I hadn't even pulled the brake drum off but my fingers were so sore from polishing an old set of AR wheels that I caved and ask for help without first trying to figure it out myself.
