I decided to put a rear spoiler on my 67. I mounted it and brought the car to a local body shop (who has a rep for being high priced but, I didn't know where else to go) for an estimate.
I told him I would remove the spoiler and bring it to him and wanted a price for paint only, base/clear Tuxedo black and another price for block sanding smooth and then paint.
He told me $150 for paint only and $300:eek: for block sand and paint.
Now, I have no experience with getting paint work done. Is that a reasonable price? It seemed really high to me. Should I keep looking?

The spoiler can be very wavy and need some prep to look good especially when black. Price might be a little high but ask for a break down of the hours and what your paying for. For that kind of money I would ask and make sure your getting satisfaction guaranteed. If you are then I say go for it if the rest of the car looks good.

Prices vary depending on location and the shop. Materials, overhead and labor are not cheap. Bodyshops make more shooting a fender or bumper for insurance work than shooting a spoiler. Resto shops charge more because the work is demanding, the quality must be high and there is no collision work on which to make money. All colors require excellent preparation; black is no exception but shows everything more as we all know. If you don't like the price, get another one. You may just burn up the fuel price shopping and spend more of your time.

Scott's on it, labor rates here are $100+ per hour and I can't imagine they are any lower in NY. Some places in the south and other states where the cost of living is a lot less have lower labor rates. A shop owner has to cover his overhead!

Bobby bring me your spoiler i will do all of the prep work and blocking then you can take it and have the color shot. im on LI also hell if you can get your hands on a quart of tuxedo black and some clear with all of the proper reducers and activators i will even do that for you also

here is my spoiler when i did it (still in primer)

You don't need a quart, as little as 1/2 pints in basecoat can be purchased from your jobber. If he has SS laying around you can blow clear over that if you want.

Not at all. Many people don't know small quantities can be purchased. If they walk into a jobber and ask for a pint or quart of base thinking that's all they can get, the counterperson will sell it to them. They assume the person knows what they want and understands the business. Jobbers generally will not ask a customer a multitude of specifics.

Good point and many don't know how well a certain paint will get full coverage with how many coats. That's something else to consider

I live right near Station Auto and was in there the other day. I'll stop in and ask Jim if he can get me what I need. Thanks Scott for the heads up on the smaller quantities available.

Steven, I was thinking about taking a shot at block sanding it myself and bringing it to get it painted but, I'd like to take your offer. It would be cool to meet another 1st gen guy in the area and check out your car too.

sounds good i would love to help out and meet another TC member. i work at the hospital over there and can pick it up after work if you would like

great im off thursdays, fridays and are home on the weekends after 830am. if you want to put some mileage on the car feel free it would be nice to see a running camaro in the driveway again lol let me know what you want to do and we can set something up

paint is only part of it, primer and or sealer, catalyst for either, plus reducer, base coat and clear coat, activator for clear, reducer for both, or single stage with activator and reducer. even though you can buy color in 4 ounces, most everythin esle is at least a quart. every one of those items is $20-$100 each depending on quantity. body shop is giving you a deal because he is not making you pay for the entire can of paint.

im using SPI epoxy primer and SPI 2k high build i have it all at my house so really its only going to cost whatever the base and clear and all activators since i believe if you are doing something to bail a friend or new friend out it should be for free
