It's to fill a niche market, there might only be a few hundred Hotwheels collectors out there willing to pay the $7k - $8k extra on the chance that 30 years from now it's a rare desirable thing... The value of the options to the average new car buyer might only be a few hundred dollars so the price is set to attract just the few and keep production down... Who would want a "special" optioned car if as many of them sold as the stock model?

True... if gasoline powered vehicles are still allowed on American roads in 30 years, it'll be the limited-production and\or 'specials' built today that'll be desirable. Just like a 1st gen SS convertible or Nickey car.
There will be a crap-load of regular production 5th gens still running around.
