I just bought a 69 350 short block (no oil pan, no heads, no manifold) for $200. Good deal or bad deal?
I guess the question is, are YOU happy with the deal? (I'd assume you are, since you handed over the money :D)
Seriously though, I'd consider that a good deal here, if it was standard bore, and a great deal if it had also been tanked (or baked), and mag'd ok

I think if it's a 4 bolt, and maybe even has a steel crank, it's a very good deal. Still okay if it has a cast crank.

Probably a good deal if it has 4 bolt mains. Especially if it has a forged crank.

Standard bore? Does it have much of a ring groove? What is casting number of block?

I think you did OK. I did not see a casting date listed, but it appears to be a 1974 block from a truck, based on casting number, stamped application code and partial VIN. Still standard bore.

A few months ago I bought a 1972 standard bore 4 bolt main 3970010 short block (rods, pistons, forged crank) for $100. Then the guy gave me a 1976 3970010 short block (4 bolt mains, rods pistons and cast crank) for free. Both were originally in trucks. I didn't argue with him one bit. :D

He even helped me get them loaded!

Has anyone done a 383 conversion? How hard? How much?

It's not hard, it's done all the time. Clearance the block (let a pro do this) and get a rotating assembly from someone like Competition Products, or a builder.

The crank is a '400' crank, but worth it to be internally balanced aftermarket (OE 400 cranks were external) , your choice of rod sizes (usually 5.7, sometimes 6.0") and new pistons to fit your combo.

As for cost, that will depend on the quality of the parts you use. A steel crank is usually more than a cast crank, and pistons can go from $100 el cheapo (or maybe less) to $700 lightweight race style pistons.

With the machining costs you will probably be from 1K-2K all said and done on the shortblock.

Easy to do. Depends what you use for rods. You can get rods clearanced for that stroke and a 350 crank, then you don't have to clearance the block.
