Re: ford 8.8 rear end in a 67-69 camaro

Wow, you dug up an old one, 4 years old.

The '99-'04 Mustang rear ends are a little wider than the first gen Camaro rear ends. I think it's about 2 inches wider, but I'm not sure. If someone hasn't upgraded it then it will have 28 spline axles in it. You can upgrade it to 31 splines with a new differential and axles. You would need to remove the Mustang brackets and install leaf spring perches.

Mike, get the measurements from the axle you are thinking about buying.

I did some searching on a Mustang site and found this information, but I can not verify since I don't have one to measure.
99 and newer Mustangs use a 59 7/8 inch wide rear axle.
Again, I can not verify that.

Re: ford 8.8 rear end in a 67-69 camaro

The FOX ('79-'93) Mustang rear end is 59 1/2 inches wide. The SN95 ('94-'98 ) was a little wider, about 1 1/2 inches I think. The new edge ('99-'04) was a little wider than that, which is why I guessed at about 2 inches wider than the Camaro.

First gen Camaro rear ends are 60 inches.

I'm also in the process of doing this , mines out of a explorer 373 with locker and discs all for $250 pulled the axles and had them drilled for 4.75 bolt pattern , swapped out the axle bearings , bought spring perches ,ubolts and slotted and drilled rotors all off ebay , with the round flange mount you need a PUJ 372 u joint and use your existing drive shaft , I also pulled the speedo sensor out and made a blank off plate ,Oh and don't forget the chrome diff cover . lokar makes a adapter for the parking brake . Mine will be in by spring but the hard work is over . I have less in this then it would cost to buy a gear ,posi , rear disc set up and when its in you won't be able to tell what it is 10 bolt chevy or 10 bolt fored . The axles to get were out of explorers where 95 to 2001 ? I believe . Their is more info I've found at lateral g and pro touring .Hope this helps .

Re: ford 8.8 rear end in a 67-69 Camaro

You are probably right Freddie. Found these measurements on another site...

94-98 Mustang 60.25" w/disc brakes and 5x4.5" pattern
99-04 Mustang 61-5/8" w/disc brakes and 5x4.5"

Not a common swap for a Camaro I would guess bu,t no reason it wouldn't work if you're willing to fab up the brackets and install the right pinion flange on your D/S providing the width is right or can be made right. The 8.8 is a great axle, light and strong, can be made to be exceptionally strong (8sec 1/4) too. .

yeah I know. I had found that conversation, but then I couldn't find it anymore.

I know that the rear-end was in a road race car that caught fire. so Im sure it is fully updated. im only getting it for $60 so well see.

Having been in a fire, it probably needs to be completely gone through. But for $60 you can't go wrong.

$60 is extremely cheap. If you bought it and resold it you would make your money back several times over. The FOX Mustang 8.8 rear ends are easy to find, but the new edge 8.8 rear ends are hard to find.

why sell when I can install it?
What are your skill sets? You have to deal with welding, cutting, drilling etc. Chevy and Ford bolt patterns are different, axle lengths are different, spring type and perches are different. If you have the tools and have done the kind of modifications needed, have at it! If you are going to be paying someone to do the work, it will be less expensive to sell it and buy an 8.5 out of a 3rd gen Nova that will bolt right in...

If you are planning on using wheels with more backspacing then it will be fine, but this rear end is going to be wider than the Camaro rear end, so your current wheels will probably not fit under the fenders. The FOX Mustang rear ends are the correct width and much easier to find. The FOX rear ends don't have disc brakes, but you can use the later disc brakes on them with the correct brackets. The axle tubes on the Mustang rear ends are about 2 5/8 diameter instead of the 3 inch tubes used in the Camaro rear end. I'm not saying that you shouldn't do it, I'm just pointing out what you are up against.
