Here is the TT and VIN from an early production ( i believe 15th or so of sept 66) car that my father-in-law is starting to restore.

He purchased the car from central Calif. about 6 yrs ago.

The drive train is long gone. One of the questions is because of the early production date, could this be an SS350 car?

Looking over on the CRG website it talks about the early SS350 cars NOT having the 4P designation OR is it just a std 327 car?

He said a console came with the car but it is buried somewhere in the attic, so can't look at that just yet.

Are there any other indicators of an SS350 that we may be able to look for.

The VIN is 124377L101815

Here is a picture of the TT...it came to him all scraped up.

Hi,
You might already have done this but by putting the info into the CRG decoder following report is created.
I am an owner of a 67 that also is built the same week :)
Rgds/Mikael

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
7 = 1967 model year
L = Los Angeles, CA assembly plant (Van Nuys)
101815 = vehicle serial number sequence

Decode for body number: 000524
09B = Built the Second week of September.
67-12637 = Custom Interior Coupe.
LOS = Built in Van Nuys California.
732 = Custom Bright Blue Bucket Seats.
Z = (A50) Strato Bucket Seats (without headrests).
F-F = Car Color is Marina Blue
J312 = internal plant scheduling code.

Here is what I came up with on your cowl and VIN tag. This only what I determined and not iron clad info. But I tried.

Cowl:
09-------Sept
B--------2nd Week
ST 67---??? 1967
12637---Sport Coupe, custom interior
LOS 524-----Van Nuys, California, Assigned by Fisher Body, no relation to the VIN
TR 732-------Bright Blue
Z------------Buckets
W-----------Tinted Winshield
Remember from her down the number represent place holders ONLY:
2M----------Powerglide 2 Sp Trans / G----Center Console
3L----------Rally Sport (cool)
5Y----------Deluxe Seat Belts

VIN:
1---Chevy
2---Camaro
4---8Cyl
37--Coupe
7---67 Model year
L---Van Nuys, LA
1018154----Serial Number. In 67 they started with 100001 so you have serial # 1815
--that being known, your car was built in the 2nd week of Sept 1966. Funny but Chevy did not release/unveil the first Camaro until 26 Sept 1966.

Hope this helps.

Kevin

Elmer----am I correct that the first Camaro was unveiled to the public on 26 Sept 1966?
It's my understanding the Camaro was first put on display for the press in Detroit, Michigan on Sept 12th 1966 and later in Los Angeles, California on Sept 19th 1966. The 1967 Camaro was released to dealerships for sale to the public on Sept 29th, 1966.

So do you think these early cars were ordered by the dealerships or were they produced via customer orders?

Between the 2 plants there were only some 15,000 Camaros produced by end of month September. That's not that many cars per dealership all across the country. I'd guess most of these early cars were not customer ordered. There was talk and media coverage of what was coming back then but not like the overload of hype we are subjected to today. Most consumers back in the day looked forward to going by the dealership to see the new cars even if they ended up special ordering their new car.

A 67 SS Camaro would have come with a 12 bolt rear axle. My early production 327/275 4 speed came with a Saginaw trans and 10 bolt but in later production supposedly got the 12 bolt axle, although I've never seen one like that.

Lots of L30/M20's got the 12 bolt on or about late Feb or early March. I have one.

A freind of mine has a Norwood early 67 that was just over the 1000th produced mark, that's the earliest 1 I've seen, it started life as a red on red 6 banger if I remember right. Now it's a 700+hp 540!!! :yes::beers:

Dennis, you're right. But I still think its cool that I was born within days of the first Camaro. 1967 S/N 00001 is is still alive too. It went across the Barrett Jackson auction block a few years ago. Its just a plain Jane 6cyl.

Most of the first couple of thousand cars were "plain Jane"-equipped, and many were 6-cylinders. We changed the steering linkage on the first 1,000 Norwood cars at Willow Run, and most of them were sixes. :thumbsup:

Were all '67 six cylinders of the 230 ci variety?
When did the first 250 ci appear?
(A friend had a new '69 with 6cyl/250 with 3 on the floor, and I was very impressed with how it ran back at the time.. was essentially equivalent to a base V8-2bbl)..
