Never seen one on a Camaro, but I have seen them on big cars. Like Cadillac and big Buick and Oldsmobiles. Its a type of balancer. Mostly see them on "long" driveshaft.
Pretty long, and heavy. If you are into hp, it will be more mass to turn. I think it has quite a long dead spot before the spline. I personally would not use it.
Since we are on this topic, how far should the yoke fit into the th400, the spline currently sticks past the end of the tranny about 3/4 of an inch, i'm having a tough time finding the correct yoke, problem is i still have the 10 bolt rear end, so i have to use a 1310 series yoke.
I would say it should go in at least three to four inches. You just do not want it to bottom out, and it needs to be fully in the bushing. About two inches of free travel would be ideal. I'm sure others will chime in too.
Do you know how long your yoke is, center of u joint to end, when i measure inside my tranny opening,
it is about 5 1/4 inches or so to the back, so i would need a yoke with about 5 inch shaft to work right, and i cant find one.
Your yoke does not need to be that long. It is a slip yoke. It needs to travel. As long as it is in the bushing about 3 inches you will be fine. You definitely don't want it to bottom out. I usually like a inch to an inch and a half outside of the seal.
Your driveshaft builder should be told what tailstock length and transmission being used along with the measurement from tail housing to rear yoke U-joint centerline to build you the proper length driveshaft
