Ok, guys, need your help. My car, 69 Camaro 396, battery is not charging. Last night I changed 3 alternators, and 3 voltage regulators. Aftermarket and NOS ones. Nothing, can't get the battery to charge. The white (exciter) wire which should be hot when the key is on, isn't hot. This should tell the alternator to charge the battery correct? I've even unplugged the horn relay to see if this somehow helped. I will say this, horn and key buzzer do not work. (I don't know if this helps or not). I'm really trying to avoid going to a one wire setup, trying to keep this original. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Update, blue wire is the issue I seem to be having. Once we make the blue wire hot, it starts to charge the battery. But that's when we physically make it hot. Some reason from the regulator to the alternator it's not making power

Update. The brown power wire under dash going to the fuse block had power. Coming out of the fuse block going to the voltage regulator it has now power. If you give it power from a different source, it starts to charge the battery.
 
Do you have an "GEN" warning light in you dash?

If so... with the engine off, turn your ignition key to the "Run" position.
  • Does the "GEN" indicator light up?
If not, check the GEN indicator bulb. If this bulb is burned out, your alternator will not charge.

I do not have the gen light in the dash. It's a factory gauge car, and from what I've read, it won't have (and mine doesn't) a gen light.
 
You need to find out why the brown wire is not getting power from the fuse box connection. It is a IGN on controlled circuit.

Time to remove connector at bulkhead and check there for 12 vdc power or probe the brown wire terminal in the bulkhead connector with a meter probe.

If you disconnect brown wire to VR and use ohmmeter to verify brown wire continuity with Ign OFF, that should prove out the brown wire.
 
Really appreciate the update. Having same problem with a 69 396. I'll get back on it when I figure out what is draining the battery on the 68. I hate electrical, but learning a lot from the site, so I'm hopeful to remedy the problems.
