Hello,

I was hoping someone could help me find out if my 283 is original to my 67. I have doubts but it sounds like there is a very small chance. Can someone with more knowledge help me? Block stamp is 3834810. Vin shows it came with a V8.

Yes, "some" 67 Camaros came with 283 engines (those built at the GM Suisse plant and sold in Switzerland), but your engine isn't original to your car. You have a 283/194 (with a Powerglide) from a 1964 Nova.

If your VIN Shows it was originally a V8 car (124377Nxxxxxx), then it started life as an LF7 (327/210) or an L30 (327/275) with a column shift manual 3 speed transmission or a column shift Powerglide.

Just to be clear, the first picture you posted is your cowl tag and has nothing to do with your VIN. There is no VIN information or partial VIN on that tag. The only thing we know from that tag is that it did not have a 350 or 396 engine. So, based on that tag, we know that it could have been either flavor of 327 or either flavor of L6 engines.

(Built the first week of July, standard interior coupe, Norwood, standard black bucket seats, A50 strato bucket seats w/out headrests, Grenada gold, black vinyl top, no other options)

Yes, it could also be a 6 banger if the VIN shows 123377Nxxxxxx

So either...

L26 (230/140) with 3 speed column shift (or) L26 (230/140) with Powerglide column shift
L22 (250/155) with 3 speed column shift (or) L22 (250/155) with Powerglide column shift
LF7 (327/210) with 3 speed column shift (or) LF7 (327/210) with Powerglide column shift
L30 (327/275) with 3 speed column shift (or) L30 (327/275) with Powerglide column shift

I appreciate it guys. I know that was not the vin. I didn't upload a pic of the vin because I already deciphered it that far. The beginning is 124377. So no.... not a 6 banger but still not the news I had hoped for. If it's not original, I might as well put a crate motor in it and give her hell.

It wouldn't have been a PG transmission, because that would get a 2M in the tag. We know that it's a standard 3-speed on the column by virtue of the lack of other transmission and center console options codes on the trim tag. So, if the VIN was for an 8 cyl, then it would have been either the LF7 with 3-speed column or the L30 with the 3-speed column. So, yes, it's time to drop whatever you want into that engine bay. In fact, it's a good car to make into whatever you want ... go for the SS/RS 396 if you want.

No. 2M was only used in Norwood in combination with D55 console. His car doesn't have the console but it could still have been a column shift Powerglide.
Thanks. I'm learning all the time. In today's hyper-controlled, mistake-proof ERP systems, it's always crazy to learn about the idiosyncrasies, inconsistencies, and outright mistakes that existed back in those days (from one of the largest, most methodical corporations in the country).
