With the new 275s on the rear I've got maybe a finger width of clearance between the tailpipe and the tire.

I know, the whole exhaust should be replaced but I'm hoping to take care of that when the engine is replaced.

In the meantime, is that sufficient clearance? It feels a little close to me but maybe it's fine.

IDK how much travel you have on your rear axle but unless you are jumping the car I think you are fine with that clearance. Given the condition of that exhaust....a big pair of pliers or BFH would dent the pipe enough should there be a problem in the interm

Your new exhaust can be fitted to not be an issue

The rear suspension seems to be extremely stiff, and if I'm jumping the car something has gone horribly wrong.

I'm probably also a ways out from corners as speed. I was a little more concerned with heat from the tailpipe possibly damaging the tire if I were to sit with the engine running for a prolonged period of time. I don't tend to drive to places I get stuck in traffic much, but you never know.
