I have watched countless videos and tutorials on the internet. I still cannot get this cable adjusted properly. Does anyone have a video or tutorial they can recommend? Any TV cable gurus here lol? From what I understand you want your first to second shift to happen between 17 and 22 mph? Currently mine is shifting at about 7 mph. So I believe that means I don't have enough line pressure? I believe I need to tighten the cable up some more? I have seen the Monster transmission video, it is pretty good but I'm still having issues. It is a Monster 2004r. All carb geometry is correct by using the Sonnax TV cable parts. Any help is appreciated

Good chance the problem is the transmission itself.
Monster has terrible reputation.

Google Monster Transmission Complaints.

I bought a 700R4 from them a few years ago rated for 700 hp. 1st trans I received was bad, 2nd one no good 3rd worked but the TC was bad. They sent another it was no good. Finally I bought a Hayes from Summit. All this cost me paying the shop to R&R the transmission 5 times.

After less than 1500 miles the tranny failed. Local shop disassembled it. Was build from used parts and had none of the upgrades I paid for. I met a couple other guys that had similar experiences with Monster.

Go to Bowtie Overdrives website and follow their TV cable instructions.

Hope it works out.

Sent my Valve Body to TCI yesterday for a constant pressure modification so I don't have to worry about TV cable setting for the pressure, just for shift points.

My retired trans guy said the best method to set a TV cable is by pressure at the transmission.
If you don’t have all the geometry correct with the carburetor and the cable connection, it’s going to be difficult to get it right. 1/16 of the cable travel can make a huge difference….or it does on my 72 C10

Which is exactly why i'm having my valvebody modified

The TV cable adjustment on a 2004R (and 700R4) trans should be "Full pull of TV cable" while the carb is at the full throttle position (assuming you have the correct geometry brackets for your set-up). You should not try to adjust your TV cable to achieve a desired "shift point". While the TV cable may have some influence on gear shift speed, it is more a function of the transmission governor... and the governor springs and weights should be modified/changed to adjust your shift speeds.

Also, if your trans governor weights and springs are not matched to your rear gear ratio, that will also influence shift speeds.
  • What is your current rear gear ratio?

As stated above to adjust the TV cable correctly, do you need to do it with the pressure gauge.

set it up correctly one time and you’re done

I agree with the pressure gauge set procedures.

TH200-4R Pressure Test Chart
To perform a pressure test on your 2004R is not hard and can supply lots of info if you are having a problem. You will need a 90 deg. fitting 1/8" pipe to -4. You will also need a pressure gauge that goes to 300 psi.

The pressure tap is located on the left side of the transmission above the linkage. Typical pressures of a healthy 2004R listed below. I have also listed the minimum required to for decent transmission life. The test should be performed with engine RPM slightly elevated to around 1200 RPM or more. Full TV requires the TV cable to be pulled out as far as it will go.

Dont get too hung up on the pressures in Park as some VBs do not boost in Park and some do. The other gears are very important.

Excellent pressure Minimum
Gear No TV Full TV No TV Full TV
P 90 psi 275 psi 70 psi 225 psi
R 230 psi 230 psi 200 psi 200 psi
N 90 psi 275 psi 70 psi 225 psi
4 90 psi 275 psi 70 psi 225 psi
3 90 psi 275 psi 70 psi 225 psi

Call Phoenix Transmissions in Weatherford TX and talk to Greg. He has helped me troubleshoot a few TV cable problems.
he was the one who finally was able to build me a 700r4 that would stand up behind a healthy bbc in the early 90s, that actually lasted more than a thousand miles.
