Just to let you know -

I’ve never put carpet in the trunk .
I‘ve always had the herringbone factory
rubber mat in all my 67/68 cars.

The reason being is -
I‘ve never had a trunk that did not leak
some amount of water , onto the floor pan ..🙄🙄

My best advice is after rain or after washing car ,
open the trunk lid and allow the area to dry , towel
or air …✅👍

I hope this helps !

you are right on the leaking part!

I have heard condensation and or water that leaks in trunk with vynal matt gets under matt. Maybe its the CA weather but I have had the stock matt in for years...nothing but dust under it. Granted it sees very little rain but trunk is always dry. YMMV

I also have the rubber mat and i was getting a small amount of water if out and heavy rain, spoiler holes were not the issue. Turned out the outer taillight gaskets failed….
Thanks for that insight . That’s my second choice when we are trying
to diagnose water ingress in most older muscle cars ….✅👍

Yes , I’d have to say on most 55 YO cars ,
what you get is drying out
of original gaskets , everywhere , on any car .

They shrink and dry up .
They let water into the trunk .

It’s the same with window and door seals .
Also , after time passes and cars are repaired ,
sadly door glass gets misaligned.

Many times water into the front floor pans is
due to cowl drain issues , and blockages .

Time takes a toll on all of us ….

Dry weather , esp. CA. Weather is not your friend .
Moisture is not good either .
I’ve seen some nice original cars from So. Cal .
But they Def. Need work . All gaskets , seals ,
weatherstripping etc. are
usually done .…

My restoration specialist always says -
drive it into the garage.
Open up the trunk lid .
Leave it open .
peel the rubber mat back , and use a towel as needed .
above all , leave the trunk open to dry .

They all leak . At least mine do …🙄🙄😜

I found my leak by opening the trunk and slowly running a garden hose all along the trunk weather strip, side markers gas cap and tail lamps. Water came in the trunk through the tail lamp bezel seals, I have the best quality "moulded' seals that Heartbeat City sells. In the end I resolved it by building up the void in the recess of the bezels by adding a thin strip of the foam tape used to seal pickup truck caps. I guess dum dum puddy would have also worked fine. Been dry as a bone ever since.
