They re-core them and then pressure test. They do not "fix" them by soldering a leaking spot. I ve had them re-cored by Glen-Ray. I save all my heater core and radiator tanks from cars I part out. We hade a radiator shop at our old bodyshop. Build up the solder on the neck bases.I bought a copper core one on rockauto. Been in the car for a few years now. No issues. It s about 1/4" thinner than the stock one so I had to bend the stock retaining clip down a little. My understanding is replacements are a little thinner but otherwise present no problems
I removed the inner suitcase for the swap. Outer suitcase remained on firewall. SBC
My $.02 about having a 50+ year old heater core "fixed"....what does not leak after fix can soon follow as the rest of it is still 50+ years old
