20 amp fuse is way too big in the first place. Coils can be defective when they initially activate, power surge would over power the fuse, that is why they aren't used, and a safety item.

If the car is at speed, and a fuze blows, car is then out of control, dangerous.

This is why I always get on rowdy on people's responses "to use a fuse on an ignition power up".

Thank you, Larry, for the error checking. I am not the smartest electrical knowledge person here, but I try to help. I appreciate all the help to keeping my posted electrical info correct.
you are helping. everyone's input and ideas are helping me to fix this car and get it on the road. most importantly we all contribute making the hobby better, stronger and faster.
(where have I heard that before?)

I have a brand new GM HEI distributor upgraded in my 69 Z28. I ran a line from the starter to the distributor input power supply. The engine would start, but would not run for long.

I ran a dedicated line from the fuse box bottom accessory port next to radio 20 amp fuse through the firewall to the distributor power and spliced into the port. using 16g 2' long. Z28 ran fine, but then it would blow the fuse.

I replaced the 16 gauge with 10 gauge results the same. Any ideas how to fix this thanks much, Joe.
something I forgot to mention, is that when I ran a wire from the ignition Spur at the fuse box, I spliced into the existing HEI yellow wire at the distributor positive input.

Now I'm wondering if that's where the problem is ???

Several of you mentioned that the HEI system does not require this wire from the starter, so I plan to separate the splice, remove the starter yellow wire. Then run dedicated line from ING fuse port spur directly to HEI positive input and see if that fixes the problem.

however, I can't seem to grasp how that could've blown a 20 amp fuse unless there's a short somewhere.

As for the resistor wire I had initially
disconnected it and it's wrapped up and not attached to anything.

I am grateful for all of you that have taken the time to try to help me fix this problem and we'll get to it. I'm sure just wonder how much it's gonna take. I'm not giving up so hope I see you at the end of this.

thank you very much, Joe

While we are still on HEI here, I found this attached HEI document. Some members might want to read up on the system. Good document (16 pages) to do that with.
up-date

I removed the 16 gauge from the starter solenoid. Ran a yellow 10 gauge line from the fuse box to the positive battery port of the distributor HEI.

I found a couple of my wires arcing against Header pipes. I also tested my spark and it was red small weak spark. I changed out the HEI cap and installed Blue Max 8 mm wires. I now have orange half dollar size spark with no arching.

I still haven't taken time to test the HEI coil. I will though.

Im still not sure how I was managing to blow 20 amp fuses. The good news is you all advised me to change out the distributor cap coil and remove that line. Once I removed that line it works beautiful now. No popping fuses whatsoever.

Even though I've have more to test I want to thank all you guys for all the hard work you all did helping me to get this fixed. All I gotta say is Camaro Guys Rule!
