Dave,
I had been curious about the feasibility from the point I had committed to the LS3.
I only saw one picture of this setup when looking for verifiable evidence of the concept.
I don’t think it’s a substantial benefit, but it can’t reduce performance.
I did like the idea of a common and inexpensive filter.
Can't hurt, looks great, the whole car, what I can see, looks amazing. Cold dense air = good. It also keeps out the turbulent air underhood at speed & fan/fans from disrupting proper fuel atomization.(y)

As far as heat rising, when the car is on the road heat rising is a non factor because air flow through the radiator changes flow in the engine bay from natural to forced convection.

A cowl hood brings in external cool air that has a boost because of the high pressure area at the base of the windshield which cold air intakes don't do, so it's more effective from a performance standpoint

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I would take a cowl hood over the cold air intake design in the picture for aesthetics any day.

Cold air intakes make sense on an LS/GenV LT conversion IMHO, not carbureted set up.
Are you talking a functioning cowl hood or just the openings?

I'm not saying this is the best idea, but it is what I did.

It was cheap and all factory parts (from some car) in the junk yard. ;)

My 88 gmc jimmy had the same type of air filter housing, snorkel, and tube that went to radiator core. It worked but I tossed it after I had water come in while wheelin. If y’all go for this type it can be found on 86-89 jimmy/blazer. Perhaps even Silverado’s.?

Concur with Tiley. I added a factory-style ZL-2 ducted hood air cleaner to my '68. It's a simple add, you may have to tweak the air cleaner height with spacer between the air cleaner and carb. Small blocks used a different one than big block cars. For good measure I added the KN top to my setup and blocked off the snorkel to ensure all intake air came from the outside of the car. The engine is a 30 over ZZ502 with EFI. It dropped air temps by better than 10 deg. F.
