O-ring T-Stat housing

Just curious but can the o-ring be replaced with a regular style non paper gasket. Pic below for reference.

I'm wanting to replace my crusty looking housing with a black one, but all I can find is black housings with a o-ring. Seems people have more issues getting a o-ring housing to seal than a gasket style.

I've used ones with just an o-ring for many years. Make sure you buy a good thick one that won't distort and leak. Yes you can also use a regular gasket on them.

You can also use a flat gasket i you like without the o ring,works just as well. Alex

My Gen 2 LT1 motor has a square edge O ring, stock. Never leaks. I have also had an O ring type on the Camaro motor without issue. Important to have crevice's O ring goes in clean

I guess this is what I get for using Google as research. Seems a lot of reviews on the speed shop websites had a lot of reviews complaining of leaks with an o-ring style housing.

Is it a bad idea to use rtv with a o-ring? I know the purpose of the o-ring is to make it where reviews is not needed

One of the reasons the O-ring style leaks is over tightening and distorting the housing.

I've been using them for years without a problem. Don't use RTV either.

As mentioned above you could use a regular gasket if you remove the O-ring.

I’ve use a o ring neck for years, no issue.

Sealing surface condition is important with an o ring. O rings will not bridge a gap like a gasket. So, if sealing surface is pitted or scratched up, use a gasket.

I just use a bead of black high temp silicone.

Another one with positive experience using an o-ring housing. No RTV, I did put a dab of grease on the o-ring to hold it in place.
