Does anyone have a measurement of the outside diameter of the aftermarket dual snorkel air cleaner, I’m guessing the original would be the same diameter. Diameter of the lid would probably be the easiest way to get a measurement. Planning to use one with GM HEI distributor, I don’t have a problem making a slight modification to the rear of the air cleaner base If need be.

Thanks in advance
Dave

Dave might try a GM original 74 Z28 dual snorkel air cleaner. GM introduced Delco's HEI ignition in "selected" vehicles in 74. Before changing all vehicles over in 75. The 74 Z28 was one of those that got it "as available" at the Flint engine plant where L82 350 was built. I read Corvette was prioritized, but some other models began getting the mid year too.

My 74 Z28 purchased in 79 from original owner had HEI & the crossed flag air cleaner "turbo-fire 350 245HP" decal on a black dual 4" or so long oval snorkel air cleaner with the chrome lid. Looks like the earlier 2nd gen Z air cleaner but cut out for clearance with HEI. So I don't think the earlier year Z28 air cleaner base will work for you without modifying if its the same diameter, which it appears it "may" be. Good news is HEI dual snorkel does exist. There may be reproductions as well if you specify 74 Z28. Good luck with your search.

74 Z28 could have come with either a points or HEI distributor. Supposedly the change over came in January. Z's built after the change had HEI. Everything previously to January had a points distributor. Q-jet and Holley are both the same diameter where the air cleaner sits. A 74 Z air cleaner 'may' have the clearance bumps needed to clear Holley float bowl adjustment screws. It's worth a try.

Thanks fellas, I’ll do a search for a 74 dual snorkel, maybe someone is reproducing it otherwise an original might be more than I want to spend. Thus the reason I was leaning towards the reproduction 70-72, if clearance is too close I think I could easily modify. That was why I was searching for a diameter to see how close the clearance might be at the HEI

Good point John! I had forgotten the car came with, and mine also had, a quadrajet. Production doesn't like to spend $ needlessly, hopefully like you suggest the just modified the base stamping vs a whole new machine.

My 70SS396 Chevelle was all original w/buildsheet & fully functional cowl hood (vacuum actuated upper flapper & throttle operated electric inlet door). Quite certain the cowl air cleaner also still factory one. The 350hp BB came with a quadrajet. I changed intake and put a Holley on it. The cowl air cleaner fit both carbs. By retaining the bumps for the Holley float bowls in air cleaner base they only needed a single base for production. Keeping it simple and cheaper. Good chance GM did that on the Z air cleaner.👍

outside diameter of the lower housing is 16 1/8"
outside diameter of the lid is 16 15/16"
I have one on a small block 67 Camaro with a Qjet, I did modify the back as it was hitting my standard coil (see photo, sorry pretty rough mod)
