Monroe shocks suck and yes the Bilstein are stiff but they are great shocks! Jack up and support your rear axle and front suspension high enough off the ground and put some muscle into it, they will compress, just be quick about getting the bolt through! I’m a disabled veteran with titanium rods in my spine and I put them on my Chevrolet 3500 4x4 dually!
Monroe is the best selling shock, as is Gabriel and Delco, KYB are all highly rated by consumer groups. Bilstein is good as well, but a more aggressive response

Melmount I hear you. I never had Bilsteins, but did buy KYB Gas-A-Just KG5521 for my rears a few years ago after reading all the glowingly positive comments about them on THIS site. They sat here about a year and a half before installing them. Cut the straps, they fully extended and like your Bilsteins could not be compressed. I raised the car high to install. When I set it on the ground it sat 4 or 5 inches too high, solid as a dump truck. Nothing could compress them. KYB is based in Asian Pacific so I emailed a few times, crickets. I threw them away and went back to standard shocks.

I jave a pair for the front that will be going in the trash as well, next time I get around to cleaning up. Funny how hated the KYB Gas-A-Just shocks are now with almost nobody suddenly approving of them. KYB offers a new style gas shock, no thank you, screw me once.....

KYB makes a garbage product, knows they do, profits on it and doesn't give a damn about you. Stay clear of that brand.

KYB are on Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Mazda as well as a few other OEM, interesting.

Shock performance is highly dependent on spring rate. One man’s experience may or not be the same as another man’s.

That being said I have only seen one guy who liked the Gas Ajust shocks and he was a new member who would likely never admit he didn’t like them….

I knew Gas-a-Justs were stiff decades ago and never wrote glowingly positive results about them. Many have said on this site as recently as a few years ago how bad they were. It was not all of a sudden this info was provided. KYB Excel Gs are stock replacements and provide a smooth ride. I have them on my 67 and my 97 crew cab powerstroke. If I hauled weight and a trailer often I'd run Bilsteins as I've driven numerous powerstrokes with them and was not disappointed in the ride they provided.

Perhaps I was reading older posts. But at least some people have posted they like them the past few years. Maybe they have the new KYBs confused with the Gas-A-Justs? At any rate what causes a new gas shock to extend rock solid? Melmount and I can't be the only ones that have experienced this.

This is the front pair I have just dug out of bin in garage and convienently today is garbage day so they no longer live here. FWIW these could be compressed by hand with a little effort. But still going in trash. While at it I should round up anything with an OER tag on it and send it to the landfill. At least it'll be a productive day😄.

They were listed as and branded as KYB Gas-A-Just. I know Scott you have always been on the side that these are junk and I commend you for sharing that hopefully preventing others from making the mistake of purchasing these. I recall recent posts that you have pointed out how stiff they are. So thank you for that.

Gonna pull out the camping chair, grab a cold one and wait to explode into jubilation as my trash guy gives these a new home. Since I can't be at the baseball state final cheering this will have to suffice, ("Little Victories" by Bob Seger playing in the garage).

There was one or two that wanted the ride they provided. May be fine for a car only driven on perfect, glass top roads. On four hour highway drives they were OK. Any backroads, country roads with imperfections and inconsistencies they let you know how stiff they are. Some people apparently like that. When I'm out for eight hours getting lost purposely, a crappy ride is not something in which I find pleasure.
