Oh yeah! I'm an unassuming guy myself and I can't tell you how many uppity types look at me and say "What are you doing owning a Z28?" Makes me feel like I want to sock'em in the forehead.

And tiny little air breathers the size of a nickle. Looks like an elephant riding a peanut.

The funny thing about how these cars were back in the 60's when they were new..or fairly new, was that we changed plenty of parts. Cragar mags with wide tires, Headers, Cherry Bomb mufflers, High Rise intake, Four Barrel carburetor and the stereo system..just to mention a few things :D

Most of the original looking cars were driven by older men and woman along with school teachers..atleast in my area. The Z/28s,COPOs,Yenko and Baldwin cars were bought by business men and " Richie Rich " kids.

No sure how many here had any of the First Generation Camaros in the 60's when they were young and left them " Bone Factory Stock " without making changes to them. In any event...to put down or ridicule how someone has done their car or finding faults is just plain wrong. From stickers to stripes or plug wires is just nit picking.........

Too many snobs infiltrating the Camaro ranks. Getting to be as stupid as the Corvette crowd. Build your car how you want. Drive your car and don't act like its a museum piece. Don't let what you think you can sell it for make your decisions for you, you'll usually lose money, if lucky, break even.

I don't think it can be said any better than this.

Truth!!

How about the other side of the coin ?

It's been a few years since I sold any of my Camaros, but the characters that would show up / come out of the wood work when you listed a 60's or 70's Camaro up for sale was some cheap entertainment.

Before the 'net was around all ya had was print, or a FOR SALE sign in the windshield.

One guy showed up after a 4 hour drive and almost had a heart attack when he saw the '68 i had for sale. The provincial rag I advertised in missprinted the price as $25000 - I was only asking $2500.

I sure would have a hard time leaving a 60's Camaro on the front lawn with a FOR SALE sign in it these days. It would either cause an accident in front of the house, or it would be stolen.

Hit the nail on the head...It's that old sayin, " It's your car..." It always seems that the person who nitpicks about someones car, that "drives them crazy" usually doesn't have a car and never did... They just like to rain on someone else s parade...We call it jealousy or envy...All that being said, It really doesn't matter what they think or drives them crazy, If you are happy, that's all that really matters...OK I am down off of my soapbox now...:)

I think I'm guilty of most of these offenses over the last 45 years. But I have to hold the line on the "Caution Fan Stickers" I could never put Ford item on my Chevy.

I am utterly indifferent what anyone else's pet peeve is when looking at my car - and mostly if anyone wants to look at my car they need to come to my house, go on a cruise I'm on, or catch me at a gas station on a trip. I find car shows to be more boring than watching paint dry and simply don't understand the need to have others go "wow" over something I own.

Sharing your enthusiasm for the car hobby is one thing - which I am happy to do almost anywhere; putting someone's car down because it's not "correct" is entirely different. If anyone wants to point out what's "incorrect" on my car, I'll trot out my six page list of "incorrect" things they missed - essentially everything but the body.

I don't have "caution fan" sticker, but have violated any number of turn-offs listed above. And you know what - be turned off! You didn't pay for it, you don't own it and you are certainly never going to drive it.

There are two ways to go with these now roughly 45 year old cars - (i) some form of original survivor or faithful clone, or (ii) modified. For me, because these cars were so compromised from a handling perspective as built, I'll go modified for everything but a TRULY collectible car because I drive my cars. I like good brakes, responsive steering, capable suspension and comfort - all of which are pretty lacking in these cars as built.

I think some are completely missing the point. Little sensitive aren't we?
I saw no post where anyone's car was "put down".
The OP wasn't asking about things we don't like to see on "modified" cars or driver cars or pro touring cars. Just asked about turnoffs for "restored" cars. Some guys here have both modified and restored. Wanting to restore a car to original doesn't make someone "stupid". It just means he or she has different goals for the car.

Modifying a car to whatever degree you want doesn't make you stupid.
Perhaps the OP should have chosen the Restoration Corner forum instead of Bench Racing. Perhaps a mod should have moved it. Whatever, no reason to start calling those who disagree with you stupid.

As some already mentioned, you've asked a good question. By going over carefully your wording, I think you want to see what would appeal to the average person out there, down the road who may want to buy your car, if you decided to sell...right? As you put it, correct changes.

By your description, you don't want a near perrfect #5, nor a really rough #1. Something that looks like a decent straight Camaro that resembles as closely to what it was originally, but not going overboard.

I'd suggest picking up some Camaro books that describe what you are looking for, or by going into the archives in the restoration area and acquainting yourself to what degree that you want to bring your car up to snuff, with what car you have, and the depth of your pockets.

There have been some good suggestions made already from the purists (hate that label) to those who mode to their heart's content. There really isn't any right or wrong in what you want in the final result, as beauty is truly in the mind of the beholder.

Decide what's important to you once you consider your budget and priorities then go for it, eh?

Cowl seal upside down
Yellow plug wires, or any color other than black
Wheels sticking out of the quarter panels
The first 4 pages of the jlc Whitney catalogue cars
Ruberband tires
Bicycle seat air cleaners
Restoration graffiti
And of curse my favorite has to be the caution fan sticker followed by the export
Only coolant sticker with us window sticker
Clones done with the wrong options or part of them, ie. chrome trim on pedals

Stickers of any kind...... in the car, outside the car or in the engine bay. Unless they are what would be there when the car came from the factory. I never understood why someone would put a two dollar msd, flow master etc sticker anywhere on there car? It takes away from the beauty of the vehicle. Also overuse of bright colored wire covers. An engines beauty is in the way it came from the factory or the way you modified it. Adding cheap colored plastic wire covers diverts attention away from the engine.
One of the reasons people use decals is to hide scratches and scrapes. One of my race cars is a '68 Caprice stock eliminator car-meaning it looks very much like it did when it rolled off the assembly line-and it still has the original paint. It has lots of MSD-like stickers all over it to hide the bumps and bruises, among other reasons.

At least I get the decals for free:).

Well I moved this to "bench racing" from restoration because in my mind this has very little to do with correctly restored cars. Think about it, if you are restoring a car to the way it came off the assembly line, anything incorrect makes the car less of a correct restoration. This thread was not guided in the right direction with info on using disc's in place of drums or using aftermarket shocks and belts... You know stuff that show judges might pass in the interest of safety. There has been no talk of adding the RS option to a non RS car etc. (Did I miss that one? I have a high fever and gut cramps right now)

Since 1999 I don't remember too many threads asking folks what they don't like going very well. This has been one of the better ones but certainly even if intended the topic is not about original cars, it's about modifying and maybe what the OP could get away with doing to an original car. I think the best message trying to come through is "it's your car, do what you want and don't worry about what others are doing!" If there is a resale issue mixed in all this, few cars will return the most money 100% stock. The ones that do are well documented and desirable to collectors with money.

The best I can do is show some pictures of what many think are the cardinal sins one can commit on a first gen.
I do agree to a certain extent of your car appealing to the other people. I honestly think that all of us want to have camaro that "others" will like be it car guys or just passers by because we all like those thumbs ups and compliments.

I know for fact some people don't like my 67, it's not a big deal and I still like them and their car or cars. It's not about being disrespectful it's just a few people taking and being honest about what they like or don't like. The occasional azzhole that comments negatively to me is just not a big deal because as others have said buy your own and build it like you want....this one is mine.

Here are few pics love em or hate em, it's what I am putting together and if some it fits your vision feel free to use the idea as you own. Mine is still a project and needs lots of work and will change as time goes on here and there or as I try new things to solve problems with parts or change out parts. In my opinion they are never really done.

No Chevy orange, not much chrome or bling, cowl induction on a 67 (yes my stinger hood is functional...just not yet) Those valve covers don't belong on that year....those are vortec heads, those valve covers can't fit them...;) Those fender braces are not black or chrome :D

Filled body seem

Gloss balck tail panel, filled and smoothed tail light housings with smoked lens

Stainless trim lightly blasted etch primed and painted 80% gloss, a spoiler on a 67, no front bumper, a bright color from a modern car and blacked out grill trim.

Carbon fiber dash and autometer gauges, hey the ones on the bottom are black.....yes wanted them that way and I still need to buy one more :D and my B&M shifter. I love that this shifter because it "WORKS" when your on it hard and hitting second and third with the tires turning and burning!!

Trunk is nice and pretty but that is not a stock looking spatter paint job

My biggest sin to date (last weekend) was going to a car show and sitting for 4 hours enjoying myself and others cars, some food and a cold beer with 60 other like minded gear heads and taking home best 60's car and best of show....

I believe when I posted in restoration is because I am restoring a car and was looking/asking for opinions on my restoration.

My experience with forums is people read way deeper into them than the simple question stated. No where was I asking to put anything down nor would I expect a person with super low profile tires to be offended with the term rubber band tires.

Being new to this site I am not sure what bench racing is but not where I would be looking for info on restoration ideas.

I cannot imagine doing any project in life where you would never consider a bottom line. Has everyone who ever restored a car before lost money doing it? Are we all going to be the guy who says $50,000 in receipts asking $20,000? If one person makes a suggestion that may benefit my restoration I am grateful. Before we all became "sensitive or snooty" this post seemed to start out well.

I will continue to watch as another good idea from a not so snooty person may have an "opinion" many may benefit from.

If anyone who thinks they are putting a car down and is concerned about does not have to post, If anyone is going to get offended by reading a post should not read.

Simple test: I had chrome cross bars on the car when I bought it: Should I remove them? ( remember you will offend someone who has them and likes them, even though I am just asking a question and looking for an opinion)(do not respond to this part))

Just enjoy!

Your topic
" What are your top 10 turn-offs when you look at a restored car? " is the problem ! If you want proper answers..you need to ask the proper questions to suit your needs. If you are concerned what may be wrong on your car..post what you have wrong or believe is wrong and let the restoration guys tell you what to change. All you did is open a can of worms for others to put down what they find wrong with others cars. Heck..some here even posted what they know is different about their cars and are proud of it

Also..the term " Restoration " has many meanings....and you didn't address which one you had in mind before posting. Telling members who you call " Snotty" not to respond isn't going to help you at all. All you are doing is flaming the fire.
