The carb on my 68 396 quadra jet has 7029200. This is a 69 model, and I can live with that. However, I can't find a code for 68 396 auto? What should it be?

36,
the Q-jet on my car has 7029202 which means its for a 69 camaro with auto trans.

702 = 1960's
9 = yr produced
2 = q-jet 4bbl
0 = Division 0 or 1 Chevrolet
2 = even numbers Automatic, odd Manual

you can go look into Quadrajet.com or post your numbers here and i'll decode them for you.

7028210 - 1968 396/325hp with auto trans
7028211 - 1968 396/325hp with manual trans
7028218 - 1968 396/350hp with auto trans
7028217 - 1968 396/350hp with manual trans

Thanks for the carb website. I thought I had it figured out but jonesy's info has me confused again. Carb info on holistic does not list 68 396/325 auto or std. (everything else but) Carburetor.com lists 7029200 as a 68-69 Chevy. All of the sources I have checked list 7028212 as a small block auto. not BB auto. My 68 350 has the 7028212. Anyhoo, I have a feeling the 7029200 is possibly correct for my 68 application. What I cant find is the date code on the carb body? Anyone else have a 396 auto from 68?

7029200 is a positively a 69 carb for 396/325hp with auto

I had one carb listed incorrectly above and have since fixed the error.

The list above is correct now.

Thanks jonesy, with three diferent 396 engines available in 68 the info on the net gets a little fuzzy. Most codes listed show 210 & 211 as 375hp, 218 & 217 as 350hp and nothing listed for 325hp. The 7029200 was used in both 68 and 69 according to the remanufactured industry raising my speculation that it may have been the 325hp application.

Jonesy;
According to the GM service Manual, there is no Qjet for the 325 HP Camaro. The correct carb listed for this engine is 7028217 for STD. and 7028218 for the Auto. These carbs are also correct for the 350 HP Chevelle, Chevy II and Chevrolet. The manual has an footnote that lists this two carbs for the 325/350 HP 396 as well. Please correct me if I am wrong, but this is how I read the service manual.

It must be a typo for the 375hp because it took a Holley 4053 carb, not a quadrajet.

The service manual shows the 8217 and 8218 for the 325 and 350hp? I think that must be an error.

The 8210 and 8211 are the correct 325hp carbs.

The plot thickens!
Not! 4053 is correct for L78. Q-jet on lo-po. There was a q-jet on L79 in 68 but not on L78.

Sorry, missed a key, L79. L89 had a 4053 "NOT" L78 that does not exist. I would still like to hear from anyone that has printed documentation and or an original 396 auto Qjet from 1968. I agree with jonesy that the 7029200 has to be a 69 application, however, before I swap this carb out I would like solid documentation on the proper application. Does anyone have the carb code for 1968 396 325hp auto w/o A.I.R. from a credible source?

From the depths of my basement library I pulled 4" thick copy of DELCO ROCHESTER CARBURETOR PARTS AND SERVICE MANUAL. On a page dated November 1971, carburetor # 7028210 is shown for "1968, 396 & 427 (standard engine), auto trans, in Chevrolet, Chevelle & Camaro". Alan Colvin in CHEVROLET BY THE NUMBERS shows 7028210 fitting "1968, Passenger 396/325hp a/t & 427/385hp a/t, Chevelle 396/325hp a/t, Camaro 396/325hp a/t".

The 7029200 is shown in both the above books as fitting 1969 only, Passenger - Chevelle - Camaro, low horsepower big block applications with a/t.

I was at a little swap meet this morning and ran across a nice looking 7028210. Sorry I didn't check the date.

Thanks for going the extra mile on that research! Of course I just spent the weekend rebuilding the 7029200. I guess I will just have to build a 69 around it LOL.

I have a friend that has a 68 Impala conv. with a 396/325hp and a Th400. The motor and trans are stamped with the partial vin and all the dates coincide with the build date of the car, so I beleive they are original. It also has a 7028210 with the correct dates for the car. The only thing in this car that doesn't match is the distributor. Someone put in an electronic dist.
