Hi guys, need to know what calipers I can use on my 67 it has the factory 4 pistons but they leak real bad, all other parts are good, can I use newer calipers off of a vett or camaro? All I would like to do is change this if I can give me some good ideas

Vette brakes would be the place to go if you want to keep your four-piston calipers. Quality rebuilds......

If you were to go with the single pistons, it would require a spindle change.

If you are looking for replacing the whole system, there are many companies as I am sure you are aware of. But if you are looking at keeping the remaining parts, rotors-lines etc, there isnt anything available caliper-wise to bolt on using your existing equipment.

The factory four-piston calipers used in the factory set-up, is an excellent even today if set-up correctly. If you want to keep them, check out Vette brakes. Other than that your choices are abundant in the brake kit world. You can put your own system together or purchase an all inclusive kit. I would really consider a kit from BAER Racing. It uses all the late model technology and the parts availibility for maintenence or replacement is second to none.

I guess it comes down to if you want to purchase a whole new kit or just re-build what you have.

thanks guys, I have been looking at the other pages and the C4 looks good but I will have to save for that, but I have the wife convinced I need to have the brakes fix...

so i think she may get the repo 4 pistons....Ricks has them for 349.00 a pair new unless you know of cheaper.. again thanks

The D52 caliper has the 2 1/16" bore which is the 'Corvette' caliper adapted to the first gen as the JL8. It is listed at $149.00.

The D3 caliper has the 1 7/8" bore which is the OE Camaro caliper. It is listed at $99.00.

And NO, I dont think you will find a cheaper price anywhere.

I should of clairfied between the first and second design calipers. The second design D3 (63-68) and the first design D8 (65-66) calipers are single pin, whereas the second design D8 and the J56 are a dual pin (as in pad retention). The two pin units are what eventually made it into the RPO books for TA racing.

J52 = 11 x 1 rotors
JL8 = 11.75 x 1.25" rotors

The power assist option was RPO J50 and the front disc brake option was RPO J52. Power assist was not required with the front disc brakes; power front disc brakes required the dual J50/J52 option. While SS neither included nor required front disc brakes, the J50/J52 combination was a mandatory option for Z28. The disc calipers were a 4-piston design used only in '67 and '68. 1967 included two one-year-only brake options: the (SS only) J65 metallic-pad drum brake option, and the (Z28 only) J56 heavy-duty front disc and rear metallic drum brake option.

The 2 1/16" bore was adapted from the Corvette platform, but was not a production unit on the Camaro what so ever. All production 67 Camaros had the second design 1 7/8" D3 calipers. The JL8 consisted of the J56 and D52 calipers at first and then it was written as the production JL8.

They also had a few that actually used J56 on all four corners without any prop and had a 65/35 bias. Not bad for a couple of guys pulling anything off the shelf and adapting it to the 1st Gen.

Here`s a place by you: Lone Star Calipers: http://www.lonestarcaliper.com/CamCalBrake.htm
They will sleeve and rebuild your calipers for alot less than Stainless Steel Brakes. I had mine done, nice work and price, I don`t remember how much off the top of my head though. Hope this helps, Brent

wow 99.00 good price for the brakes may have to go with this unlit i get the money for the c4 upgrade, but i will try the c4 on the back with 98 vett this will work on a 12 bolt?

This is an interesting thread. I think I may have found something out about the brakes on my '67. Way-way back I upgraded the power drums to front power disk's from a '69 GTO. Two piece rotors and all. Then on this site Dave has posted about the V-notch on the '69 f-body calipers.

The ones I used don't have this ('69 GTO). I thought it strange as I figured the GTO & Camaro would use the same caliper. Over the years I discovered that the ones I used are a D52 unit. Recently I even upgraded the pads with the HD service vehicle ones (a lot more pad area and thicker backing plates).

Now with what Tom posted, RE: bore diameters, it now makes sense. Not only are they not the same caliper as the Camaro units, the bore is larger. I've always had to check the rear-view before using the brakes to capacity. And with the better pads the car hauls down even better.

Bob.

so you can use 98-02 camaro or vett or is it 92-97 for the c4 upgrade. I have been looking at the 97 camaro stuff at a local parts store
