New Member and first post here:
I have access to a 1969 Z28 with RS option. My understanding is there were only 3000 +/- made like this. First, is this pretty accurate as you understand? I have read on this forum that no one really tracked this back in the day.
The car is original and in extra good condition with 33,000 original miles.
The owner was a good friend of mine who I raced with. He was in process of changing out the rear end and lost interest. A couple of years later he had a massive heart attack and died. His widow has no interest in the car at this time. The car has not moved since he died.
It has been parked in a residential garage for the past 24 years.
The car still has the original 302DZ Z28 motor with it in the garage, although not in the car now. Currently there is a Early 70's Big block in the car.
Original Muncie 4 speed, and 12 Bolt rear end still with the car.
Interior is very good to excellent. Body and paint are also in excellent condition. I think a good cleaning and probably go through the DZ motor would put this back on the street in excellent condition.
Now to my real question…..
If we were to want to sell this car, what would knowledgable people on this forum think would be a fair price to ask for it.
Thank you for any response with your thoughts on value.

Start with 243,085 total Camaros in '69, and 37,773 of them came with the Rally Sport option; that's about 1 out of every 6... Using that ratio on the 20,302 Z/28 in '69 nets you about 3300 with the RS option. That's not the most accurate but there are no published numbers so it's a good guess.

I have to question what "extra good" condition is since the car was raced and has a transplanted BB in it and the rear end was being changed out when the car was put away. Any time a car has been raced there is potential for all kinds of hidden damage and modifications that can effect the cars value. How much was the car raced? Got any photos? The more that is shared about the car the more accurate an estimate of value can be made.

I will get it out of the garage in the next few weeks and post some pictures. The car was not heavily raced though. We were mostly street racing (I know, I know) and having fun. Big block was put in it for some bracket racing. We only ran them at the drag strip on weekends and not even all weekends.
Of course all of this was "back in the day".
We had no idea what we had! Nobody cared about the small block cars then.

Hello Phillip -- It's really hard to say what the car is worth, not seeing it and not checking the numbers. Any paperwork on the car? Can you post the numbers on the pad of the engine with pictures? For starters, hopefully the motor on the side is a real DZ motor. For instance if you didn't have the right 480 distributor and wanted a correct dated one, I've seen them sell over $2,500 on crazy-bay. Transmission, rear end, alternator -- same.

First thing to do is to get all the numbers on the parts and start checking to see if they match the date car was built. Hopefully the car has a build sheet or a protecto plate, both would help immensely. Post a photo of the trim tag on the firewall and we'll help you.

Now for your question: The car has been garaged/sitting for 25 years. If there's no rust, I would say it's worth $20,000-$30,000 unrestored, depending on the original parts on the car. If you take it to a restoration shop, get ready to shell out another 50 to 60 grand, depending on how far you want to take the restoration. Then in my opinion, it would be worth $75,000-$85,000 restored.

Hope this helps. I have a '69 Z-28 and spent a lot of time an research on numbers, so feel free if you have any questions. I'm curious to read what the other members will post, too.

Well, I guess because I would pay 40K today for a 33K mile 69 RS Z/28.
I really think your estimate of 20-30K is low but I will pay that:D

Guys, thanks for the replies. I guess what I now need to do is examine everything closely. But, I am confident the DZ302 is the original. I will need to See exactly what paperwork she has besides the title.
Anyway it will take me a couple of weeks to get it out and cleaned before anything else will happen.
I will keep you guys posted, but I am encouraged by what I am hearing from you guys. I just hope she does not change her mind and jack the price up.

If the car is still very original (albeit with the exceptions you already noted, like the engine swap), I'd strongly suggest that you avoid cleaning up the car. Unrestored, original paint cars are extremely popular in this age of over-done trailer queens, and the best intentions of making a car look presentable and appealing to potential buyers after years in storage can often destroy original details and appearance. Just my 2c worth, but I'd get all the relevant part numbers and leave the car otherwise as found.

Well, I never thought of it like that as far as not cleaning. There is always the "if" thing. If I can get the deal done, then if I can get her to let me keep it there for a while.
I guess, I could get it loaded onto a roll back and leave it as is.
Then on the other hand, I am not completely sure I would let it go either. On the other hand, I am not as young as I was when we were racing these things so not sure how much I have left in me. LOL

You guys are a great resource for information and suggestions. I thank all of you for your posts and suggestions. I will keep you posted.
