8.5 goes for around $200.00 , 8.2 is junk. 8.5 is a much better rear, and cheaper to build.

I've seen rebuilt posi 8.2's on ebay for $800-$1200. Same for 8.5's.
For a used peg-leg 8.2, you can find them for $125 or so.
I wasn't able to find a local, rebuildable Nova 8.5, but didnt look all that hard for one.

8.2 will handle some power WHEN built right...I was in the 11's and Erics68 was in the 10's (until he snapped an axle....which are the same size as an 8.5" BTW)
Depending on whats in the 8.5" ....$100 for a housing to $1000 with all the good stuff ?

I would not sell any of my "Nova " 8.5 housings for under a couple hundred dollars. Camaro second gen 8.5 rears are a dime a dozen. 90% of Trans Ams had a posi unit and a 342 or 373 gear.

But 1"-2" wider I think ?

if its a 8.5 posi 3:55 or 3:73 then 400-500...
GM doesent make 3.55 for the 8.5's- they do make: 2.41, 2.56, 2.73, 2.92, 3.08, 3.23, 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10

"Camaro second gen 8.5 rears are a dime a dozen."- used to be but they are getting hard to find now.
the Nova 8.5's are getting scarce around me I have drug some home from El Paso, Abilene, north Tx I'm grabbing all I can find (reasonably)
last one i picked up I got for $75 and almost bought 2 more for $150 but the cars had 7.5's from the 75 and later 6 cyl were 7.5"- dont waste your time on them!

I am seriously wondering if I even need to get a 8.5. I doubt my car will ever see the track, there will be some spirited driving on occasion, but not like I would have done 20 years ago. I am really leaning towards just putting a posi in my original 8.2, putting the gears in I want (nothing wild, probably a 3.3x), and all new bearings and seals and calling it good.

The second gen rear is longer, but can be cut down. I have used the carriers out of Trans Am's and put them in the Nova rear. I don't know , but I think GM did use a 3.90 in some three speed cars in a 8.5 housing. I know summit and Richmond gear offer them. I put one in a ChevyII two years ago. It was a second gen 8.5 rear cut down , with custom axels , and Ford big bearing axel ends. GM might not offer the gears, but you can obtain 3.90 and 3.55 for a 8.5 housing.

I paid 1500 for a rebuilt 8.5 10 bolt with new Motive forged axles, GM 3 series posi, new steel clutches and black powder coating. From a '71 Nova and bolted right into my Camaro.

The guy is on Team Camaro and Team Chevelle and has sold about 40 rears over the years. PM me if you want contact info.
