Has anyone had experience with this?
Turning the latch handle results in the hood opening only about an inch.
The hood closes perfectly.
All of the components...spring/plunger/retainers, are original, and are aligned/adjusted for the correct top to bottom clearance. The hood closes perfectly.
The heavy, rear hood springs are lubed & unobstructed.
I'm wondering if a new latch spring would do the trick, or maybe shimming the spring at the bottom retainer?

What do you mean? I am not aware of any 67-69 Camaro that the hood opens all the way when pulling the latch handle. They all "pop" enough to get your hand in and open the hood all the way. Springs help get the hood up and keep it there.

the hood latch spring is only designed to allow the hood to pop up just enough to get your fingers in there to open up from there. as a safety feature, you still have to hold hood latch over to release it from first position. if it doesn't pop open enough to get a hold of it, then possibly a new spring would be the solution.

To clarify, the hood opens only an inch...not enough to get my fingers in.

yep, that's about what mine does....to clarify, if you can get a hold of the lip of the hood at that point, (it will still be latched) and raise the hood up from there while you hold the hood latch lever over...that is about right. even with a stronger spring, the hood won't travel beyond the safety open position until you go to step two.

I must have nuclear springs.
To open my hood, first I make sure my chin is out of the way. Then put one hand in the air so as to hover over where the hood will be. Then with the other, rapidly release the latch. As the hood fly's open the free hand is used to slow it down so it doesn't slam against the stops.
Setup; Original springs, latch, hinges and GM ducted hood. Oh, LPS #3 as hinge lubricant. Car is May-Norwood SS with BBC of course.

As Jon & Rick suggest, the latch spring pushes the hood up to the safety catch when latch is released.
The spring may need shimming, or stretched, or the latch bolt lengthen (unscrewed) in allowing the hood to pop up further if the spring is strong enough.
You also might lube the retainer and bolt first.

If yours opens an inch, that's as much or more than near about any one I've ever popped. I though that was the reason for the two indentions under the edge about six inches from either side of the centerline, just to give you a little cave-like lip.

No, it's a dumpster.

:D:

Stolen pic off the interweb.....I think you're right though.

The hood only pops up about a inch put that is enough to get a normal size fingers in to lift the hood. If you pull the hood release to also open the safety latch it may open a little more. On my hood when you pull the hood release it pops up to the safety latch (that is what you see in the picture) and then with a little more pull the safety latch releases and the hood can be pulled up.

I could adjust the spring out another 1/2" but I have no problem the way it is.

Below are pictures of the hood latches and one showing how fare it pops up from the first pull of the hood release.
