This guy was handcuffed in front of his 14 yr old son and charged with a felony due to the tire marks left in the parking lot. And before he was arrested, he offered to pay for the "tire damage."

I am usually proud to be from Upstate NY...

...Having a teenage son myself, the punishment is hard to understand.

Not defending the arrest but the Town Hall parking lot, that was just striped and is next door to the Sheriffs Office is not a great place to pick for doing donuts. Just sayin. That said, a ticket and having him pay for the re stripe seems a more reasonable punishment.
.

Is it illegal to spin donuts in some one else's parking lot? Was he actually charged with a felony, or is this just speculation?

"Graham faces a felony charge for the tire tracks because the cost to repaint the yellow lines exceeds $250. Graham admits he made a mistake and he’s offered to cover that cost, but he thinks the police are trying to make an example out of him."

...So I guess he is "facing" a felony charge to be accurate.

I think the guy either needs to know his community better, or is just plain stupid. Really town Hall parking lot. Why would you think you would not get in trouble. I guess it was a week day during business hours or it would not have been seen when they were going in the building. Give him a ticket for not knowing where town hall is , and make him fix the lines. I'm not a cop, but it is people like him using poor judgment that make job security for cops, and firefighters. I am a firefighter, and I say it at least once a day , poor judgment pays my salary.

The article reads to me that he was arrested on actuation of "endangering the life of a child"

“Endangering the life of a child?” Graham said as he started to get choked up. “For someone to accuse me of doing that to my son that probably hurts more than anything.”

That would be a felony not the tire marks left on the stripes.

He should have offered the cops some donuts too, they were probably jealous they were not invited to the donut party. :D

A felony charge is pretty severe, probably get busted down to wreckless operation of vehicle, which is bad enough, but better than a felony on his license.

Guy should have known better though, fresh lot, fresh paint, city hall, cop substation??? Geeze, can I buy a clue please?

I wonder if this thread would even be here if he was a ricer Dad in a Honda?

Well boys there is 3 sides to every story one side the other and then just the plain old truth of it . That being said the town hall parking lot was not the place for that granted that was poor judgment. I can also see it as a father and son bonding moment again granted that was poor judgment also. I also think that for the most part as fathers at one time or another have taken our children for a brisk ride or a row of the 4speed. Here again you could also say that is poor judgment with children in the car even though it was done in a parking lot or a desolate road. the man did say he was sorry and offered to pay all damages , I think the felony charge was excessive and maybe not the right charge, after all he didn't steal anything or hurt anyone. Maybe defacing of municipal property or something to that effect .For now looks like he needs a good lawyer, hopefully the judge will see things in a different light. Alex

At the bottom of the article.

You all seem to be focusing on the donuts and missing this important point.

I hate to see this guy get in trouble for exhibition in his Camaro and although it seems the police actions/charges were excessive I see many things at play!

First off he did commit a crime and property damage was done. How would you feel if someone committed a crime and damaged your property? If it were a juvenile you might demand restitution and not press charges but if an adult you would probably say throw the book at him! And how would you feel if the law were such that everyone committing a crime were allowed to offer to pay for the damage to avoid being arrested?

He probably broke several laws; the most serious "endangering a minor", as well exhibition of speed, and probably other laws depending on state and local jurisdiction. From a gearheads mentality it might be hard for some to see endangering a minor in the equation but this is the 21st century and a car is about the same as a loaded gun and the law requires acting responsibly with both.

I read 2 articles on this and one pushed the endangerment of a child, the other glossed over it and highlighted the felony as being for damaging the stripes in the parking lot. The media is the devil and too many buy into the first thing they read! Unless you were there the only thing you know for sure is the guy did a couple donuts, and it was next to the police station and city hall! The chosen location says a lot both about the guy doing the donuts and the reason for tossing the book at him!

Oh and if what I looked up is correct, in NY a felony is $1000 or greater, other states it's as low as $250 so the writer probably didn't check his facts very well!

In the old days it was considered an accident if someone died in a car related accident where there was a speed contest or exhibition of speed. Today it's almost automatically vehicular manslaughter!

How many youtube videos have you seen of some jack a** deciding he is going to do a burn out or donut and end up side swiping a car or running into something they never intended to. It is one thing to do this by yourself and only put yourself at risk but his kid in the car? Also it costs money to maintain parking lots, blacktopping line striping and although it sounds funny try going into your neighbor's driveway after he just blacktopped it and do a burn out and see what he says.

An old adage...its all fun and games till someone losses an eye
