what all do i have to have plugged in to get the starter to crank. the back of the ignition switch has ign/bat/key+/key-/acc/grd. the reason i ask is because the setup i had when i got the car had a push button start on the dash. i bought an entire new harness(painless) and new key switch and i tried to see if it cranks but it won't. i have the + cable hooked up and the selenoid wire on the starter. i don't however have my mallory unit installed yet(a friend said i don't need it plugged in to hear the starter crank) is this true. as long as i have the starter wiring correct should it crank?
i do have power to the ignition switch because when i turn the key i can get the wipers to work but without the turned key they won't. can someone shed some light on this for me? do i have an uncomplete circuit.

You will need a volt meter and or a test light to figure it out. First place to check is whether or not you have voltage and ground at the starter motor solenoid. If not, work your way back through the circuit until you find the offending component. Troubleshooting electrical systems without a test light or meter (my preference) is like playing pin the tail on the donkey. You might get lucky once in a while but you won't be able to see what your doing.

i've allready tested the circuit and connections through the starter and they have juice. i've got the dash lights and lighting working also. just want to know if anyone has tried to get the starter to crank with just the basic battery and key ignition connected to the starter.

Ground cable from battery to engine block? Momentarily, place screwdriver across the positive battery cable and connect with the 'SOL' terminal. Starter should kick in and turn.

Purple wire goes to "SOL" or 'S', yellow wire to "R" terminal. This circuit is hot in START position.

place the screwdriver on the positive terminal at the starter? the - cable is grounded to the block.

if i was to run a push button ignition again, which two wires do i connect to the switch so it will start. before, i had to have the key to the on position and then it would crank.

I installed the same kit and had the same problem. You have to have the neutrel safety switch hooked up or it won't crank. If your just checking the starter out you can just wire nut the two neutrel safety switch wires together. I believe they are the two purple wires (under the dash).Good luck

i'll check on that tommorow. all i need is the starter to crank so my 383 will come alive.

Neutral/back-up switch will be mounted in the console bolted to the shifter. It may need adjusting to close the circuit.

I say its in the console, because I don't think there were too many column shifted SS's.
