ok here is what happened. The battery was low and when I went to start the car it had enough juice to enguage the starter, but not turn the car over. The started stayed enguaged and the wires got hot. The inside wire to the starter burnt into and the out side one got hot also. I replaced the inside one (to coil) and then spliced a new outside one all the way back to the firewall. It was not melted. I removed the starter and tested it just to make sure it worked well. Put everything back with a new battery. Lights work etc, but no starting, not even a click. I figure there must be a fuse link somewhere that burnt uo, but have no idea where to look. HELP......PLEASE mark)sanders@bellsouth.net

I noticed in your post that the inside wire is going to the coil. The terminal on the solenoid closest to the engine gets the heavy originally purple wire. The terminal farthest from the engine gets the small originally yellow wire that goes to the coil. If you get them mixed up the starter might stay engaged when you let go of the key. There's also a good chance it will fry the resistor wire that goes from the firewall bulkhead to the coil. Don't forget to check the neutral safety switch. Manual trans is on the clutch pedal bracket, auto is on the shifter.

Hey Dynaflash,
I had a problem just like this about two years ago. When i turned the key on and tried to start my camaro it melted the same wires as yours. My car had set over the winter and i had lost the ground between the starter and the engine block. I cleaned the block where the starter bolts on and the starter itself. This cured my problem. It might help to try this. It won't hurt any. jimbird
