Well confirm what your vehicle left the factory with:
with Console but no gauges?
with u17

I don't have the AAW catalog numbers but from memory you can take the Ricks part number mentioned below and add "CA" or look them up at http://factoryfit.com if you are planning to order direct from AAW. Ricks has a 20% sale code out there right now so go with ever is cheaper. Both have great customer service departments.

You need the 6905 console gauge conversion harness to convert from idiot lights to gauges. For $95 bucks this gives you everything already connected, terminated no soldering no cutting no terminating your self and all the colors will match factory specs and wiring diagrams. Makes this project a single day conversion project and doesn't require you to be an electrician stripping bundling wires all weekend. IMHO worth every penny in ease and simplicity. This harness creates the service stub that terminates under the dash and the the console harness connects to. This stub snaps into the console hold down bracket.

Note: You will not be using the included Tachometer signal lead part of the harness set since you already have that installed. You can sell it on eBay since it is worth 25 bucks alone. Or if you order direct from AAW ask about getting a custom conversion harness without it but that might not reduce the price.

Finally you will need the 97580 console harness for manual transmission to connect the gauge set to the conversion harness stub. $19.99

Let me know if you have any questions

I know this is an old thread, but not sure I should start a new one because I think it is the same topic.

I have a 1969 Camaro RS with gas gauge where the tach goes and a clock in the center, a console with no gauges.

I bought the factory tach and console gauges and a harness for the console gauges with a rectangular connector but do not see the corresponding place to connect it under the dash - therefore I assume that I need a conversion harness??

Also, I took the dash out, removed the large gas gauge, tried to put the tach in but it wouldn't fit. I was told I needed a new dash and went to buy one but it was the same. What am I missing?

I have tried to follow this thread and have re-read it over a few times, but I am not sure what I need.

What I want is this car to look like the RS I had when I was a teen: Speedo, Clock, Tach and console with the 4 gauges. The only difference would be I have the HEI ignition so that may be a different thread for that, but just thought I'd mention the whole ball of wax up front.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!

Re: Console gauges Installation

I can help with the tach, but not the harness.

You have to cut a hole in the dash carrier if you want to fit a factory tach. Heartbeat City is the only vendor that I know of that will sell you a carrier with the hole already there - they are pretty proud of them. It's not hard to do - here is how I did it:

Re: Console gauges Installation

There are 2 harnesses total, one that goes from the fuse bulkhead to the console, this has some off shoot wires for the tach, fuel light depending on if you bought it with these wires. This same kit has the additional wires that go on the engine side to get the amp, water temp, etc. This same harness has (2) row connectors at the console, the original interior harness plugs into this, and now marries the original interior harness to the the new functionality so the output to the console harness contains the old + new functionality.
The secondary harness replaces the current console harness if you previously had the console but no gauges. It plugs in to the earlier harness and now connects the gauges, additional lights.

I started you a new thread. Yes if your vehicle did not leave the factory with the gauges then you need the conversion harness and then the console harness that fits your type of transmission.

As stated HBC does sell the carrier already cut for the tachometer and Clock but the templates and the process is not too difficult.

I used this template to cut out the base of my fuel gauge location and purchased the necessary items for full gauge conversion, including tach, gauges, temp sender, oil line w/fittings, and wiring harness.

Took my time and ended with this...

You can do it...good luck!
