Hey everybody, I recently ordered a replacement aftermarket SS fuel cap for my 67 Camaro as the old one was missing and it had a weird one that didn't fit correctly on there. Upon installing, I immediately found that the new cap will not even twist on to the filler neck, it seems to be about a 1/4" too small to catch the lip of the neck to twist on. I've tried to research the issue but I haven't come up with much. My understanding is that the filler neck opening can stretch or wear over time with use and cause a loose cap, but my filler appears to be in very good condition. It also appears to be original, I've read that some of the aftermarket ones may not fit well. What are my options here? Was my new cap made incorrectly? I wish I had an original to compare against. Thanks in advance for any help!

When I installed a new gas tank I installed a new filler neck with the new piece of rubber. I bought a new rs cap and it fits nice and tight.
I wonder if it's just one of those things where I need an aftermarket part to mate up correctly with another aftermarket part.

This thread has a different problem but it shows the way the filler neck should look.

That's what mine looks like. After work tomorrow, I'll get some pictures of both the filler neck and gas cap and show a measurement of both. Hopefully someone here with both known original parts can tell me which one is out of spec.

Okay, here is what measurements I've found.

This first picture here is of another gentleman's car he allowed me to take locally at a show today. Unfortunately, I had no way to take measurements.

Image

Here is my filler neck. General opening is 1.445" diameter.

Image

Here is the fuel cap. Measures 1.327" diameter. This is a .118" difference.

Image

Now, here is the locking tab opening on the filler neck. Measures 1.717" across.

Image

And here are the locking tabs on the fuel cap. 1.539" across. A .178" difference.

Image

Can anybody here verify these measurements against their car, preferably on both a known OEM filler neck and fuel cap? (If not, please specify which is a repro). Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

So the cap goes in the filler neck? It appears all the measurements of the filler neck are larger then the cap.

Are you saying the cap doesn't hit the stops? Many times the stops get bent and need to be adjusted. In your first picture of the other persons car you can see one of the stops. I don't see any on your car.

The cap will physically fit into the filler neck - the problem is that the tabs on the cap are too small to catch on the lip of the filler. I can just set the cap in place and pull it right back off, so my problem is that the hole is either too big, or the locking portion of the cap was made too small.

My original filler neck measures the same as yours. It's a bit beat up from a billion fill-ups and the stops are no longer that functional. I've been too lazy to try and bend them back.

My repro SS 350 cap that I bought about 25 years ago measures 1.365" across the center and 1.630" across the locking tabs.

As long as I pay attention to the stopping point, the cap fits fine.

The measurements of my original filler neck and an NOS RS cap are posted below, next to your measurements....

Thanks to both of your for your measurements. While it seems like my cap may be slightly undersized, after looking at the pictures of fuel necks compared to mine, I believe mine may be bent/worn at the lip, and stop tabs were bent down. I attempted to bend them back, and the cap did fit better. I'm going to try replacing the filler neck, hopefully with NOS, and see if the problem sorts itself out.

You are right your problem looks to be your filler neck. I measure my filler neck, which is original and it is a little less then 1 7/16".

Good luck finding an NOS. If you settle for a repop, I'd suggest paying a little more for a CHQ filler neck....

Thanks for the link. I ordered a cheap one yesterday, just to try and have everything put back together for now. If I'm not satisfied with the fit, I'll order up one of those. I'll keep you posted on whether or not this solves the problem.

Did you order the large rubber connector hose? If its original its most likely cracked and ready for replacement. The alcohol in the gas doesn't help then either.

I received my new filler neck in today and I'm happy to report that the cap fits on as it should! Now to fix the crooked letters.

I just put a new cap/filler neck on my '68. As you have probably found out, the emblem ends up crooked. I am sure you have done the research, but I simply put mine in a vice and in small increments, twisted it to get the emblem straight. It took 2-3x of small twists (by hand) to get it right. Just don't get too aggressive with it or it will snap.

Nick R 23, You are not the only person to purchase a SS gas cap that doesn't fit. I purchased my first replacement RS gas cap in 1997. Well my cap fit but would never lock into place with the RS straight up and down. I could turn it 360 degrees and it wouldn't get tight. I also read of problems with the repo SS gas top back then too. I don't remember if a solution was ever found because I use a RS cap. In 2004 I replace my gas tank, new filler neck with hose and clamps. I bolted the cable of the old RS cap to the lower left hole in the filler neck. I pushed in on the cap and turned until the RS letters were straight up and down. It didn't hit any stops as I could turn the cap some more. Also only one lock was holding the cap on. You could stand from the side looking at the cap and see it was sticking out at the top and pulled in at the bottom. So I took a chance for improvements to a new RS cap last year. When i finished installing it I slowly pushed in on the cap and turned it until it stopped. The RS letters were also straight up and down. I couldn't have asked for a better fit:hurray:

Luckily for me, this one seems to fit much better with the new filler neck, the stops feel nice and positive. Comparing it to my old one, I can certainly see the difference. Also I've seen most other people's caps being riveted to the plate with the locking tabs, however, mine came screwed on, and I'm hoping I can remove the screws and trim little slots into that plate, and be able to rotate it to where it needs to be.

Well, now that I have everything installed, both the cap and filler neck fit excellent, AND the letters actually lined right up! I'm very impressed with these aftermarket pieces. Don't mind my unfinished tail panel, the PO brazed up the filler neck hole! Still cleaning up that mess...
