I'm going to be going through my spare 396. It's basically identical to my born with motor and it's what I'll be running for the time being. I believe it's a 71 Chevelle motor. 402... 854 block. 3993820 heads. It appears to be bone stock. What I'm trying to figure out is whether or not there is a full gasket kit that will cover me or if I should buy everything separate. I'm running headers and an Edelbrock Performer intake with a Holly 3310, so I figure at minimum I'll have to buy those gaskets separate.
All I'm doing is opening it up to inspect what I can visually see and sealing it up and painting it. It came out of a running car my buddy had. I'll probably pull the heads and do valve seals while I'm there. I don't see any reason to do bearings or rings. I'll pull it again at some point and do that. For now, I'm trying to keep it a budget motor.
Last thing... I already pressure washed it, but I want to really clean it so I can paint it. What's everyone doing when they aren't hot tanking them?

Those look like Oval Port heads (and Intake) - so the Summit SUM-G2618 (@$60?) BBC overhaul set should meet most your needs.
This set is manufactured by a name supplier and is fine for most stock/near stock applications.
GM stuff is still available in some cases, but I'm not sure the 'full' overhaul set is currently available. So you'll end up piecing together what you need most likely if staying "All GM' ...

Thanks John. In the end I kind of figured I'd be doing a little piecing together. They are oval port heads. I'm leaving the engine alone with GM for parts for now, but I don't care about GM or not for the gaskets.

Perfect Doug. Those two with a set of header gaskets sounds about right. I looked through a bunch of kits, but some of them had some subtle differences that made it so I couldn't tell if it was for my application. I didn't want to go through the buy and return five times. Thanks.

Anybody have any suggestions for prepping the block to paint?

Seal it up good... tape up all holes.. then clean/scrup with Simple Green and a scrub brush... then hot water and soap. If there is loose old paint, then wire brush that off first... After removing all oil, grease, loose paint etc.. and the hot water wash, I'd dry thoroughly, then rub it down with paint thinner or lacquer thinner to try to remove or thin-down any old paint. After that I think you'll be smooth and clean and ready for new paint (or very thin coat of primer before the paint)...

Now that's what I'm talking about. Thanks Gary. Some great ideas there. I'll give them a go.
I'm tossing around the idea of throwing a cam and some roller rockers in while I'm there to free up a little hp. I don't know if I want to spend the money on it though. This is just a temporary motor. If I put a cam and rockers in, then why not rod bearings. Rod bearings to rings and on and on it goes... She seems to have been running decently. Internally it's pretty clean. No obvious sludge etc.

If the cam looks good, run it. Seal it up and spray it and stay away from the while your at rat race.
