I'm trying to remove the old steering wheel hub from a Grant steering wheel to replace with a removeable steering wheel. I put on the steering wheel puller and started cranking away. Then, one of the bolts decided it was time to break. Ok, no problem, I'll just use the vise grips and unscrew my screw-up. Vise grips wouldn't back it out. Plan B - use the Dremel to cut a slot and try a screwdriver ... no screwing, it wouldn't budge. That sucker's in there. Alrighty then, lets try an easy-out ... not so easy. Plan D, use a gear puller. The hub has three 'leafs' to grab on to. The gear puller has two 'legs' to grab with. The 'legs' either slip off ('cause I can't get an equal 'bite' because of the tri-shape of the hub) or the puller bolt in the center slides off. I've tried various way to try to keep the puller bolt from sliding off the steering wheel shaft - no good. I've sprayed a bit of wd-40 on it. Cussed at it. Nothing seems to work. Don't wanna try heating because of all the wonderfully delicate & expensive plastic pieces in the steering column.

Any ideas on how to get this aftermarket hub off the steering column????

I believe a couple things you could do would be to reinstall your 2-jaw puller, 3 would be better, and before install, add a worm gear hose clamp.

Install the puller lightly, set the jaws in place, and place the hose clamp about the middle of the jaws, and/or closer to the gripping end, and tighten the bejesus out of it. This will prevent the jaws from slipping off. Apply a good amount of pull.

Now, one of two choices can be made after loosening and removing the pinch bolt at the steering box, 1) Hit the puller bolt with a hammer to "shock" it, or 2) apply heat using a butane pencil torch.

The hub is alum, the shaft is steel, alum will expand before the steel.

As a last resort, use the dremel tool and cutoff the hub, then straighten out the shaft splines with a jeweler's files. Before adding the next steering wheel, coat the spline with antiseize, it'll make life easier next time.

Be sure tongue is in the left lip corner....
