OK guys, the misses today tells me she would like to drive my new addition (69 vert) sometime. Yeah, I know. So my TKO 600 plans may be changing, again, LOL. :D Anyone install the 4L80E ??? Thoughts, doubts, comments????

I do realize you asked for opinions from anyone who has installed a 4L80E.
I have not. I did look into it. I have a 68 El Camino (I know, wrong forum, but I know the guys around here) and just sold the PG trans out of it. Building a very mild low torque 350 for it with a roller cam for longevity. It will have to tow my car hauler from time to time.
I looked at the 4L80e but decided on a 200R4 instead. It seemed like a much easier swap, not being totally electronic. Don't even have to change the driveshaft. Just have to dial in the TV cable and use a kit for the lock up converter. On the other hand, you will have to use a stand alone electronic controller on the 4L80E.

Now, back to teaching her to drive a stick. First, I should disclose, generally speaking, I hate automatics. The El Camino and my wife's MB are the only autos in our stable. I have converted 5 or 6 BMW's from auto to stick over the last 25 years. If there were a feasible way to convert the wife's CL600, I would do it.

Even if you are going to end up using an auto, you really should teach her to drive the stick. What if she ends up liking it? You're off the hook!!! My kiddos are grown now, but I taught each of them to drive using stick shift cars. Mind you, they had never driven an auto when they learned to drive with a stick. For many years, none of them would even consider a car without a stick. There is just something special about being that involved with your car.

My wife wants a lot of things she can't have. Need some pointers?

Years ago I picked up a lease car and they had an auto and a six speed. Since the wife was going to be using it a lot I got an auto as she couldn't drive stick. My buddy said "That was dumb. You should've gotten the stick. That way she could learn and it wouldn't be your clutch."

I actually like the idea of an auto in a vert. I just bought a 67 Vert and will be leaving it auto.

As long as you have a real Camaro with a stick to drive too;)

Donnie: Just noticed your car is an X66 car, so I presume big block. Correct?

If so, it may still be feasible to run a 200R4, but it may need built up, especially if your engine is modified and or you are going to drive it hard. And it will need to be built beyond the "stage I" and "stage II" builds for sale on ebay.

How are you planning on controlling the trans? 4L80E will require a computer and harness to shift. Unless you go manual valve body and shift it by hand every time you need a different gear?

Its been a while since I've priced the controls but they use to be anywhere from $500-1500 for them. Maybe they have come down some?

USSHift.com has a very nice set-up for the 4L80E and priced reasonably IMHO.

I have been looking at http://www.jakesperformance.com/4L80E.html
They have several different stages of the 4l80 and also considering buying there rebuild kit and have my guy that builds my 400/350TH to build one for me. Everyone I personally have talked to that dealt with jakes is happy with the trans and overall knowledge and customer service. I have talked to them a few times and seem to be nice guys.

Thx Sedric. I would like to use Jakes as well, but if I remember he was at the high end at around 2900. Don't remember what the core charge was either. Also I only noticed 2 stages. The lower stage was rated at 750 hp. I really don't need that much. 500 hp rating would fit my bill better.

So, this is for the convertible? Small block? Engine mods?

If not over 350 to 400 hp, I would go with the 200R4. No extra for the controller.

BTW, anyone have any experience with either of these two sellers on ebay?
