I'm currently resurrecting a 1991 Camaro Z28 350 TPI. Seems like a lot of play in the rear axle. I just had the differential completly rebuilt new bearings, seals gears etc. When I put my foot on one of the rear wheels and shake it, it sure sounds like there is to much play in the rear end. I was told there is no adjustment in this type of rear end(limited slip). Also when turning onto an uneven roadway the rear end sounds like it's going to drop! I had someone checked it out and I was assured nothing can be done to improve the noise in the rear end. Anyone have any comments or ideas. This is keeping me awake nights.

that sounds more like a rear suspension problem than a differential problem. just a guess. never did a foot-shake test myself, but if something sounds loose when you do that, it should be easy enough to find. might just be the exhaust rattling, i dont know.

I have new exhaust and new shocks and struts. I was told that this type of rear end has a floating axel. Wasn't aware a floating axel existed. Is there any way to tighten up the extra play?

You have the same rear in your 91 that I have in my 93 Z. If you had a posi installed did you add positive additive to the lube? If not there will be some chatter. Also the noise level varies depending on the carrier. Auburns are noisy and tend to make a lot more noise through corners. Eaton carriers are more reliable and quieter.

Get rid of the Auburn differential that is in it and get a new Eaton put in. The Auburn is probably shot and there is no way to rebuild it. When it wears out it will have a lot of loose play in it, not to mention all of the powdered metal from the worn out cones that is going through your bearings. The Eaton is a much better differential.
