My first car was a 1974 Plymouth Duster with a 318ci engine. I used it for everything including off roading and jumping (I'm very serious). I am so lucky to be alive after the way I drove that thing. Ended up breaking the K frame and selling the engine and trans to one of my uncles. I drove it around for several months with the broken frame, tires wearing out and squiling even going in a straight line (what a dummy). The car was bought from another uncle for $300. It was gold with a snake-skin top. This is also the car that taught me it is not a good idea to Armor All a big flat vinyl bench seat, almost slid out of the passenger side dooron the first left hand turn I made.

Mine was a 69 VW bug that was painted gold.(Dad sold Gold and Silver, hence the gold paint job) My dad gave me the car when I was 15 and told me we had a year to replace the motor and get it running. It was a fun father/son project, not to mention a cool ride once I shved the molding, lowered it and painted it aquatic metalic blue.

69 Convertible - Restification in Progress

My Dad made a standing offer when I was a kid that he would match whatever dollar amount I could earn/save for a first car. In 1978 and shortly after turning 16 I had 1500 bucks together and decided on a 1969 Z/28. We looked at several over the next couple of months but Dad shot them down for one reason or another. We finally found a clean low mileage Z and bought it. I'll never forget driving that car home and my Dad offering it a spot in the garage. Little did I know that I would not drive that car again for over a week, as he immediately had it up on blocks and wanted to go through the brakes and make sure the car was in overall safe condition before turning me loose in it. The car was a RS/Z28, ralley green, M21, 4:10 posi, and manual steering. That was the least optioned car I think I have still ever seen. In those days every other stop light was a potential street race. After a year or so I had that car tuned razor sharp (with help from many people) and knew how to launch a 302 powered car. The only cars I was ever worried about encountering on the street were the occasional big block. I sold that car in 1980 and a guy that worked at the local chevy dealer bought it. He added almost every option known to man to that car. A couple of years later I was in the Army and was talking cars with this guy I met in Texas. Turned out his brother was the current owner of that car and was in Northern California at that time. The California license plate " 1CLEANZ " was still with the car and thats how we knew it was my old car. They sent me some recent (at the time) photos. I lost track of the car about 10 yrs ago. I never kept the VIN number, but I'm sure if a L.A. built ralley green RS/Z still has that plate its my old car. If anyone knows of this car, I'd like to get back in touch with the current owner and pass on my contact info in case the car ever comes up for sale. Any help would be much appreciated. Bob

It has come a long way since purchase.

Yup, the '68 was my first car. It is kind of funny how I came about getting the car... I was 15 and my dad told me he would help me buy a car of my choice. I had saved up every penny I had ever gotten for birthdays and such, so I had a little bit to get something halfway decent.

I decided that I wanted something different... I didn't know what, but something. I wasn't very well versed in cars at this time, but I figured that if I looked in the antiques and classics section, I would find something cool.

So, finally the day for my first test drive came... it wasn't a Camaro, but rather was a '69 Chevelle SS396. After stabbing the throttle of a that car, I was hooked. Before that all I had driven was a 4 cylinder pickup, a 4 cylinder minivan, and a 4 cylinder Dodge Aries!!!

Anyway, the Chevelle was out of my price range, so the search continued. Without even knowing what a first gen Camaro looked like, I set up an appointment to go see one. We drove out to the boonies and came to the address in the trailer park. This guy had a bunch of old cars he was selling, but the Camaro was the most beautiful design in my opinion.

Took it for a test drive, (it needed work, but did run), said I liked it, and without any negotiations he agreed to knock $2500 off the paper's listed price, which put it right in my price range! The deal was done, the next weekend we went out and got the car.

Then, the hardest part was still having 3 months until my birthday and having to just stare at the car in the garage and then beg my parents to ride shotgun so that I could drive it after they got back from work.

Mine was a 1962 Chevy II with a straight 6. By the time I finished High School it had a 327, 12.5 compression, 292 Crane cam, gear drive (everyone though I had sand in my oil), 3000 converter and 4.11 open rear end. I was running high 14's and burning the one tire half way down the track. Eventually it got wrecked to many times and sold it for my Camaro I have now.

68 Camaro base coupe,327/275, 4 speed Saginaw, 12 bolt open 3.08 rear.Bright yellow(not original),black vinyl roof and interior.
Sweet little car,I drove it for three years,puffed the 327,put in a 283 and sold it.Bought the 69 Z/28,which I still have(27 years later).
As a side note,I think i saw my old 68 a few weeks ago.I had noticed that, from the rear, the body contours of the 67-68 were very similar to the 68 Corvette.I bought a set of fiberglass fender flares for a Vette and grafted them on to my Camaro.Sure enough, they fit pretty well.Any way I saw a pretty, black 68 with the same flares on it recently.Anybody in southeastern MA know who's car that is? Just curious to see if it's my first car.

I thought I would mention my second car, a Blue 64 Cutless F85 with a 330 V8 and an auto. It had airshocks pumped all the way up in the back and welded spindles up front. Raising the car up in the front and rear about 2-3 inches. Back in the day (1977) alot of cars were "jacked up" like that. I showed a picture of my olds to my sons (twins, 16 yrs old) and they asked why I had made my car a 4 wheel drive. They did say that is was "sick". (cool)..LOL. Good car, was hit broadside by a 75 coupe de ville doing 45.. ouch that hurt...Mike

1980 Buick Regal. It had 61,000 miles one-owner old lady miles when I got it. I put another 20,000 miles on it that year. It used so much oil my mom bought me a case of Valvoline for Christmas. The cam started to go bad and I sold it to a guy who ran in the demolition derby. I slept in the trunk, front seat, back seat, and the roof of that car.

It was 1974.A 57 Chevy Belair was suppose to be my 1st car. While my Dad and I was on the way to get it,we spotted a sharp 65 Chevy II at a parts store with a 4 sale sign in it,so I bought it instead. It had a warmed over 6 with a 3 speed.I thought it was the baddest 6 cyl around. That was untill I raced a 67 Camaro with a built 292,and boy his tail lights went outta site fast.Kept the car a week and sold it for a $75.00 profit.I thought I was rich, just gave $250.00 for it.Went back and got the 57 with 75000 miles and a 283 powerglide like for $195.00.Times have changed.

1951 Ford Coupe ($200 in 1955); stuffed a '56 Cadillac in it, set back 12", Moon discs, sidepipes; finished up the interior after the "doghouse" was done around the back of the engine (first things first). It was a great Woodward "sleeper"

My first car in '78 was a 67 Mustang GT 289 Hipo 4 speed. It busted alot of a$$. Next in '82 was a 77 Corvette L82 4 speed. Then a new '84 Mustang SVO (very fast, great handling car). Next I bought my 67 RSSS Convert. in '87. Then in '89 a '70 Boss 302 Eliminator. I still have all of them, but drive more practical automobiles now-a-days.

My first car was a 4-speed 66 Mustang GT Fastback. I was 16 and picked it up for $900 bucks in 1982. Had a nine inch posi, hi-po 289, and Shelby cobra tach from a donor GT350. Man I should have never sold that one.

'68 Camaro
maginal paint
singleplane intake
very radical cam
teeny weeny valves
2.73 rear gear

It didn't run too good.

I bought it because it was a Camaro, and, well, the cam, man! (which I still own).

My first car was a 70 VW beetle. It went through many transformations (and engines) in the 8 years that I owned it. I wrecked it twice playing in the snow and I finally sold it about 6 months ago. I love my Camaro, but I will have another bug some day.
