Well first off let me say this is an awesome site!!!

I have a 67 w/327 and a powerglide. I have a 700R4 laying around and started thinking how nice it would be in my camaro. So what should I expect in the swap. How hard is it? I assume I will need a new crossmember, does anyone make one or do I have to fabricate my own. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The 700r4 is a nice swap indeed. Many here have done it, and there is a lot of info. use the search link at the top of the page to find it. An outfit called Bow Tie Overdrives seems to be a popular vendor.

And Welcome to Team Camaro!!

Here's one of BTO's links http://www.700r4.com/faq/faq.shtml that will answer some questions or their main page is www.bowtieoverdrives.com. As Jim mentioned there's plenty of archived info here at TC as well. I did the swap in my '69 and it wasn't hard at all. The two main issues are the cross member and the drive shaft that will need to be shortened about 3".

Yeah it is pretty easy. Just make sure you have everything before you start. I started without all the parts and it took me a month to do the swap because I thought i had everything but i kept finding out i needed more. The only problem I am having is lockup wiring fuse keeps blowing and the TV cable binds (view my thread).

For a crossmember, I bought an imported piece for the TH400. You then cut off the bracket that bolts to the trans. Weld this bracket back on to the other side of the crossmember, on the center. (The bracket is offset for use behind a TH400 behind a big block.) The crossmember will then bolt in the stock holes for a 700r4 for about $50.

I tried to fabricate one. It looked fantastic, but unfortunately I couldn't install it without dropping the subframe down. I catapulted it into the corner and bought a crossmember from bowtie overdrives. Works great, has good exauhst clearance and is lighter weight than my creation. It is plenty strong and comes with all the mounting hardware. You must ask for the mount though - it's a few dollars extra.

Don't forget to science out the TV cable. This item is vital on these transmissions. If you can't cobble some oem stuff to fit, Lokar makes em. Holley also has a bracket to attach an oem cable. I recall some discussion on this within the last month or so, you should find it easy.

you'll also need something to lockup the torque converter, that was discussed recenly as well.

Rigging your stock shifter to work won't be a problem, either.

The imported crossmember is about $50 at Ricks and can be easily modified. BTO's crossmember is $150. Many do it yourselfers will love to save the $100.

I recently installed a 700R4 in my 68 BB Camaro. I am very happy with the result. Before the swap I was constantly looking for another gear with the 400T and 373 12 bolt. Anyway here's some of the nuts and bolts of it. I bought a shifter converter kit from Siftworks. My understanding is the stock set up will work, you just can't pull the trans into 1st manually. I bought the crossmember from BTO. Some will say it's overpriced, I didn't want to cut up my original, so if I was buying anyway, that's what I bought. On my offset BB application , all the holes needed slotted a fair amount. On a centered small block I think it would be a drop in affair. Whatever crossmember you use, make sure there is no metal to metal contact, you will not like the result( ask me how I know). I ordered a new heavy duty driveshaft Denny's driveshaft to fit my application. There are other ways to do, but I got on the phone and 2 weeks later a perfect drivshaft showed up at my door, and my original is still intact, nuff said. My trans is a TCI streetfighter which I found locally on EBAY. It came with a lock up wiring kit which includes a vaccum switch. I can manually lock the tc in second and third and it locks on it's own in OD. Thes can be bought from TCI if you're interested. Not sure if a vac switch is really needed, I think I might prefer full manual control of the lock up. Torque converter is a Pro Torque 2800 stall. One of the really nice things with this set up is you can use a fairly slippy torque converter, but with a flip of a switch it locks and doesn't mean a thing. Nice!! Overall I am very happy with the swap. If I would have built a trans or had one shipped in I probally would have gone with a 2004R, but at my power level the local 700 R4 fit the bill. I used a Holley TV cable bracket, a geometry corrector bracket from Sonnax on my Holley carb and it works fine.
