Can i jump in on this thread for some advice?

My car is about to hit the road after a long break.

I have a fresh 454 and T350 installed. The 454 is mostly standard at the moment, with a mild cam, Weiand Team G single plane manifold, and a Quickfuel 850 DP annular booster carb, 4 into 1 extractors. I have a set of AFR 265 oval port heads here to bolt on later down the track along with with a comp cams XR 292R cam, 1.7 roller rockers etc. This cam will put me right on 3200rpm up for the power band.

Full cam specs here:
11-773-8 - Xtreme Energy? Mechanical Roller Camshafts

Will be building a T400 with some decent parts with the help of a friend when the little T350 gives up. The plan is to put in a 3500 stall at the same time.

Going with a longer plan of pulling the motor/box together, then doing the cam/heads and gearbox all while its out. Dropping it all in as a new combo.

Right now, the diff is a open wheeler. I'd like to put some money towards this end first. I don't know where to start with the diff, with regards to gear ratio and carrier. It's a factory SS car, and i'm confident it's the original housing to the car. I think the gears are currently a 2:something. Quick bit of research indicates either 2:56 or 2:73, or maybe a 3:07.

The car will mainly be used for cruise nights, with an occasional squirt. Car generally won't see any freeways etc. The wheels are 18" all round, rear tyre is currently a 285/40. I will be going down to a 265/35 sometime soon.

Do i need series 3 or 4 carrier? What spline will the standard axles be? 30 spline?

It would be best if you started a new thread instead of hijacking satz28's thread. Your are probably going to get several replies that will just confuse this thread.

All 12 bolt factory axles are 30 spline. You will need a 3 series differential. I'd recommend a Eaton Posi.

Why such tall gears on a car that will never see the highway? If that were my situation, I'd be going no higher than 3.73, probably lower. I'm keeping my factory 3.31s because I have to hit a lot of highways around me.

I like the 3.31 or 3.55 gear with the auto and the BBC. Unless you are hard out racing I would not go with a 3500 tc. I'd suggest 2200-2400.

Many guys like the Eaton over the Auburn because they a rebuildable. However for a street car I don't think the extra cost is justified if your looking to save a few bucks. I believe Yukon also makes one that is basically a knock off of the Eaton for less money.

Lockers make noise and they pop and jerk. If you are the type of person who like a smooth ride then you won't like the locker. I love them. I've had 2 S10 4X4s that I installed Lock Right lockers in and I just installed a Yukon Grizzly Locker in my 3rd S10 yesterday. My Camaro has had a Detroit Locker in it for around 25 years. If you don't mind jerking and popping then a locker might work well for you.

If you want something that works smooth and quiet then I recommend the Eaton Posi or Yukon Dura Grip for a clutch type unit. The Eaton Truetrac is a gear type unit that also works well. I wouldn't put an Auburn in anything except a scrap metal pile.
