Its hard to say.. Its on that edge of keeping it survivor vs restoring it.. If it hits $40K I'd be surprised.. But kudos if it does. If the salt wouldn't have been a factor then it would be a totally different conversation.
I also Darrell hope the best for seller but thinking 35K would be a top figure and 40K would be just stellar but I've been wrong many times. :grin2: As stated it will be interesting.

I think you guys are in for a huge surprise!! When this 68 Z28 brought 16K, not once but twice and the caliper is no where near this one. I also remember seeing a Lemans Blue 68Z with NOM needing resto do 30K a couple months back and if my memory serves me correctly I believe it belonged to Camaro Specialties or was affiliated somehow.

I think the car would bring good money, but maybe just not on Ebay.....Just my 2 cents

Where in the hell would you find and how much would the cowl plenum cost to replace? I'm thinking it might go to 42K in the last flurry of bidding.

Car's at $36,000 -- getting kind of pricey and hasn't met the reserve yet. I'm really interested in this one but if it was mine, it would sit in my garage and I wouldn't do anything to it.

I talked to my buddy who knows a lot about these that they make a plenium air filter out of carbon fiber, if that's what it is. Does anyone know? It's an aftermarket one, to look original. (Wonder what an original one would cost?)

Just wondering if he has the reserve set sky high just so he gets an idea what someone would pay for it. I don't think he's owned it that long.

I'm following it on eBay..At 5:17 PM EST, It's up to $36,001 with 4 hours to go. Reserve is not met. I actually printed out a copy of his listed details in the description section and will use it for a "correct" 68 parts reference guide

That's about all the money for this car, imo....wonder if it was even close to meeting the reserve ? What's your thoughts on the value, Charley ?

HBC... $6500 for an original Camaro Cowl Plenum air cleaner GM 1967-1968 - 1967, 1968, 1969 Camaro Parts - NOS, Rare, Reproduction Camaro Parts for your Restoration or $895 for a repop. Says the repops are fiberglass.

So it definitely needs to be restored in your opinion ?

A repaint and little refurbing here and there wouldn't cost a lot, especially if you're a painter. I guess it would no longer be considered a "survivor", but can't see how a repaint would hurt the present value ?

They can be found but it takes some searching and originals vary considerably by condition and who's selling but a ball park would be $3500. A picture of our 68Z with original air cowl plenum and duct. I agree 100% with what Charlie said concerning costs.

It is a no win situation if you are buying as a investment to restore. You will be upside down. It has to be someone willing to take one for the car hobby. I'm restoring a 66 Bonneville and will be in it probably twice it's value.
Charlie - I agree with you 100%, and I'm surprised to see how high the car bid up. I was thinking in the neighborhood of $37,000 tops. Also, you have to keep in mind that this is a 68, not a 69. 69s bring a lot more money. What drew me to this car was all the documentation and correct numbers. I think it would be a show-stopper and a big kick to watch all the Camaro fanatics look at this car at big car shows. If it was mine, I would not restore this car. Cool car.

Hat's off to you Chick, as I couldn't resist adding the 302 sticker ! :D
They weren't part of the deal (in the trunk), huh ? Seems like it should've been included with the installation instructions !
Thanks Garth! No there was not sticker on the air cowl plenum air cleaners. I've seen some on over the years but they did not come that way.

The problem with doing a little refurbishing is where do you stop ? Any area you redo makes all the surrounding areas look like crap. Look at the engine compartment and try to decide what to redo and what to leave.

X2 This is one of those cars that falls into the gap. If you're happy with it the way it is then it has value to you. If you want it to restore it you'll be be very quickly into it for way more then it will be worth if you decide to sell.

Body and paint alone will be at least $10k - $12K if you don't run into any rust surprises. The rest of the restoration not including any work to the drivetrain probably another $10K if you can do most of the work yourself.

IMHO you'd end up with $75k into it by the time it's all said and done.

A lot of nice cars out there for $75K

Exactly (what Charley said); the problem isn't just that it needs paint to be beautiful; almost all the parts of the car need *refinishing* and protective finish, JUST to preserve the car... the paint/finish is *gone* or *going* on almost all the parts in the car...

The fact that it isn't 'pretty', doesn't bother me as much as my imagining the parts continuing to 'rust/deteriorate' each day...

Although I am surprised it was bid up to the $40K mark; I am shocked anyone would want to restore this car.. Granted it looks like a leopard;as I heard Steve Shauger refer to it, but this is an amazing car just to keep and enjoy. Not as a daily but a car you can cruise in and hit a few spots.. If I had the money I wouldnt hesitate to "take one for the team". But again Im not sure I would pay more than the final bid.

One man's rust is another man's patina. :smile2: I don't think this would degrade significantly if kept indoors in a dry climate etc.
