Hi-

I'm currently rebuilding a 69z28. I will be hopefully beginning body work in a few weeks.
The color of the car is dover white with black stripes and white interior. it has the orig block trans and rear.
I'm torn with keeping it the orig color. I'm wondering about value if it is changed. Wondering if I should just put the color I prefer.
I was hoping for some opinions ......

thanks!

I am doing the same thing. I am almost 1 year into mine and I work on it everyday! I am almost ready to paint it! I struggled with the same color problem. My car is original garnette red, after changing my a 1000 times I went original. I think you should stay as original as possible if you are concerned about value. I am doing everything myself on mine including the paint and body work. If you go that route and have never done this before be prepared for more work than you could ever imagine, but it is worth it. :)

Grag-

I've done body work before. I've painted a few cars a while back. I've
never dug as deep as i'm into thing thing though. My big issue currently
is welding. I don't know how and I need some work done on my quarters.
I'm tired of trying to find an individual I can trust, so looks like I need to
learn...
Thanks for the response....

Is your car all original? That whould be the turning point for me. If I had All mathcing #s and the interior was still stock. I would go factory color. But if your not a fan of white then , you know the answer. I would'nt worry about value If the cars done right the color wont matter.

I'm trying to make the same decision right now. If you're thinking strictly resale value, then I would stay original (especially with an original Z). However, if you hate the original color, and you're planning on driving it for some time, then every time you go to climb into it, you're gonna say, "man, after doing all that prep work, why did I paint it *****, I hate *****". I wish I could give you a $ figure on the difference the car would be worth with and without the original color, but I really would have no idea. For me, I've decided (for now), that I'm going with another color, GM of course:)

Good luck!

Like I said before the original color will not make that much difference in price if its done right. Think about it, Its not like the next owner cant paint it back to stock. If you're dumping the motor or tranny or both, then thats different. Those items can not be bought but a new paint job can be had very easy. Especially If the body is done straight the first time. For a guy to spend 25-30k on a Z and doesnt like the new insane "viper red" he can put it back to dover white for very little. Know what I mean??

Thanks guys ....

Value is a factor I was considering. Its not the only reason. I like the color.
I like lemans blue more. The reason I started to consider a color change is after all this work i'm not sure i will want to do a ground-up again and certainly after all this don't want to sell it right away (made that mistake once!) So I began to think to paint it the color I want even though white on white is fairly rare. Most of the components are orig, except the heads and master cylinder.
I think hearing from all of you is great. It helps!!

I would keep it the original white on white. That is not a common color combo and looks great on a 69 z28. There are tons of lemans blue ones out there.

I went all orig. on my first Camaro,a '68,mainly because my Dad was taking care of the restoration(I paid him back, lol). It was a staright six, painted teal blue.I liked it and I kept it that way because I was going for the totally stock orig.appearance.
My '67 that I have now .....I did everything the way I wanted, there is nothing really stock on it.I made the interior houndstooth, changed the motor,Yenko stinger hood, and it is painted an '05 Chevy color.

If you are not even putting the vinyl top back on then don't worry about staying orig.

A correct color change would not be cheap. The car would need to be disassembled partially to do it right. Since the car is mostly original, I would keep the original color. Otherwise, if I was buying the car as an investment with incorrect color, I would factor the cost of a new paint job and that could run $4K-$8K.

I believe this to be a misconseption for "semi original" hi end muscle cars. I can not find one correctly built "real z" that suffered in a sale becuase of the incorrect factory color. Yes full concourse and cars trying to reach full concourse should be kept that way for value and culture. But a car thats got the goods i.e DZ and full drive line and with a pro like custom paint job the car will fetch just as much if not more to the right buyer. You may get a few folks that pass but not too many. I really think a real Z painted black with white stripes or red with black or white stripes will fetch just as much even if the paints trim code says other wise.
