I am nearing completion on my 69 (cranked it and moved it under it's own power this week!). I need to buy a period correct battery. Can some of you give me your recs for such a battery? It should be a top post type. Do they make some sort of 'jell filled' batteries now?
Thanks,
Mike

Most of the big vendors sell the "original" appearing batteries. I tried to buy a side post one in the spring, but they were having problems with them. I called a place that specialized in those and they said the sidepost ones were failing and they pulled them off the market until the problem was solved. They also offer the battery "topper" that make it appear to be the original type, a fraction of the cost. The battery I needed was going to be about $170, not cheap.

Also, there was a website www.vintagebatteries.com that doesn't load for me anymore. ?? The address has changed. (The site that loads with the camera is a different site and not the site I am refering to..)
I bought a 750CCA Delco Energizer top post from this guy (Mike). I have not yet used it so I can't comment on it's performance but it is a maintenance free repro with similar to Optima internals.. It's not a topper.

Well, I ordered a R59HC battery from Rick's (if you ever call there ask for Gary Clark-you cannot beat the service this guy will give you.) I have bought period correct batteries before and honestly had pretty good luck with them. After all I have gone through getting this 69 correct, it must have the correct battery.
I checked the Interstate site but they sell only their modern looking batteries for these applications. I have the correct battery cables on the car (from Rick's) and I had some concern about the spring-ring battery fitting the posts on some newer batteries. This way I will not have to worry about that matter.
Thanks for the interest/help.

I used a topper with a new Delco. I had to shave down one post to get the spring ring to fit (forget which one)

The problem with this approach is that the sides of the battery look nothing like the original. I think the original had a basketweave pattern. A sharp eye will pick that up right away.

My topper is about 1/4" larger than the battery. I don't understand why someone doesn't mold a correct battery box that a battery can fit into. Then put the topper "lid" on for correct look.

Try New Castle battery Co. In Ohio. 800-622-6733
They make the replica batterys for everyone else.

Ask for: Bill. - He Garrantees them for 4 years
and has pro-rated them for me in the past/.
Always stands behind his product.

THEY NOW MAKE A MAINTAINCE FREE R-59.

Or, National Parts has the toppers for $39.95

Tell Bill - "Jeff from Florida says hi!" - he has always been good to me.
