Hello,

My dad found the original radio from his 69 SS 396 daytona special (something to do with a neoprene bumper) today. I have it here. The thing is, the car had the console 8-track player and I want to know exactly what this radio was worth. It is AM/FM via a slider bar that rolls the dial back and forth from khz to mhz. It has a hole in the bottom near the rear that looks sort of lyke a DIN style plug where he says the tape player plugged into it. He also has, I believe, the tape player still put away as well.
here are some pics that may help. Just curious what these are worth.
Thanks guys.
Randy

It is not a 69 Camaro radio. Maybe a 68? Is there a paper label on the side?

No, the label is gone. It was in a '69 camaro SS, bought in 1970. The car was a pale yellow, with black side stripes, the hood had the two rectangular trim pieces in the middle, 396c.i. chambered exhaust, 400 turbo. 4:11 gears.

The car looked identical to this one with the exception that the front bumper was plastic and the same color as the body.

Here is an auction for a NOS 69 AM/FM. Notice the slanted fin heat sink in the back. this heat sink was a 69 Camaro only shape. Yours is on the side and square.
OK then, I don't know how to explain it. :clonk: I understand that that particular radio ONLY CAME IN 69 CAMAROS AND NO OTHER CAR, but, is that THE ONLY RADIO THAT CAME IN THE 69 CAMARO? Does the factory installed console 8-track that interfaced with the radio make a difference? I don't mean to sound argumentative, but this now very interesting because the radio was even still in the box that the pioneer stereo came in that was installed in its place. Unless we're both crazy.

Not saying that it did not come out out of your camaro, but it was not an original 69 AM/FM. Other similar year (and newer) radios do fit into the camaro holes. If you ordered an 8 track in 69, GM just added the 8 track to the existing AM or AM/FM mono or AM/FM stereo radio. Without the paper sticker, it will be tough to say what it is.

Is the faceplate angled? tough to tell when pic is straight on. 67 and 68 radios had an angle to the part that stuck through the hole.

Looked through Ebay a little more and it is looks just like a 67-68 Am/Fm mono radio, but not from a Camaro. See the pics in these auctions, the camaro radios have these wings on the sides to mount the cover. The Am radio auction shows a good shot of the front without the plate and the knobs and surround are similar to yours.

If this is the case then why is it that, although there are several on the net that look like it, none of them have the multi-pin plug in the bottom? (pic 4)The 8-track was pluged in there if i remember correctly. I do remember that the tape player iterfaced with the radio somewhat. ie when you played a tape the radio would cut off. also, if I remember correctly, the radio played through the dash, while the tape played through seperate speakers.

Kevin,
I feel like a complete idiot!!!! And I appologize. You ever see those Outback Steakhouse commercials? Well a boomerang just hit me in the head....and it had 1968 pickup written all over it. That came out of my fathers truck and must have gotten stored with the camaro parts somehow. :clonk:
.........Still can't figure out that plug though!

:EDIT:
Found one Here that is exactly like it to a T! Thanks for being patient and helping me out :beers:

The plug socket is for a jumper that either connected the unamplified output of the radio to either the output amps in the radio, or to a multiplex unit that was separate from the head unit. If the unit is not a stereo unit then the was just a plug that went in that socket. If the unit was a stereo unit there was a cable with a plug that went in there. The unit will not work without the plug installed.

I've seen the console 8-track players at shows and on ebay before and they seem to still sell for a pretty good amount of money, considering that it is a discontinued format. I have an 8-track player in my 67 camaro but it is not an original chevy player.
