OK, I have a 69 Z/28 that I purchased back in January. I can not find a VIN# stamped anywhere on the block (looked everywhere). My trim tag reads as follows.
69-12437NOR260916
TR-711 71-71 PNT
02D X77
Now, the block casting number is 3956618 and the casting date is B-5-9.
The block build date on the right front pad is V0212DZ.
BTW had the oil pan off and it is a 4 bolt motor with windage tray.
My question is, would it be reasonably safe to say that this is the original engine since all the info points that way, even though there are no VIN#'s that I can visibly see.
VIN# 124379N603512

Could you post a picture of the engine pad? Your trimtag looks real, and seems to line up generally with an 02d car. To me, the VIN range seems closer to an 02c car, but it could be an early 02d car. I had car #124379N607641 with an 02d build 4000 +/- away from yours.

The block vin stamp will be near the oil filter stamped into the rough casting at a verticle angle. With paint and installed into the car it will be VERY tough to see it. If you can, wipe the paint off that area with lacquer thinner and see if it helps to find it.

My car is an 02D z/28, it is actually in the classifieds now, and the engine has no VIN by the oil filter but does have part of it on the bellhousing right next to the oil filter flange. I have pics of this linked at my photobucket site. Your car is only a few VIN's earlier than mine, engine sounds like it is the original, 02D cars are strange, I have seen engines (backed up by paperwork) that range from end of January to first week of March stamped DZ date codes. Just my opinon.

Look at my pics of bellhousing, see if you have any numbers on yours like this.
