whats the best way to prep manifolds prior to painting or coating? It seems like years ago i remember leaving manifolds in a 5 gal. bucket with some sort of pool cleaner or tablets overnight and that did the trick. I just can't remember....any thoughts?

thanks in advance!

Exhaust Manifolds are CAST IRON steel. One method of restoring Cast Iron is done by a process called FLAME SPRAYING, whereby hot molten aluminum wire is sprayed onto freshly sandblasted cast iron surface to form a thin coating. This aluminum coating must now be painted with a "Cast Blast" paint to look like REAL cast iron......but the new aluminum skin prevents new rust and corrosion from starting.

Try www.z28camaro.com :)

I also recommend Jerry, he recoated mine using the above method and they still look perfect.

A word about Muratic acid, you can buy this at Lowes and alot of other places. Ihave used it to strip parts.A few things that I learned the hard way do not use this inside the vapors will cause things to rust like drill presses. You can actually watch things rust after stripping them. I got good results as follows: Take the part out of the acid
immerese in water immediatly
blow dry with compressed air
then
paint immediatly
The word immediatly is not used lightly here.
I highly recommend sandblasting instead. thats my .02

Just remember to add the acid to the water and not the water to the acid...it will pop and or explode...use gloves and face protection...don't ask me how I know...Mike:D

As far as the coatings that are available from the vendors (eastwood, year one, etc.), which have you guys used and have had the best experiences with? Ive used a few different ones, and were good. But a lot have been on customer's cars that I havent been able to follow up on to know the durability. I know the Eastwood product has a 6 month shelf life, which I'm not real crazy about.

Any thoughts/opinions?

Dave, The Eastwppd product has about a 6 month shelf life on the manifolds, too....at least that was the case on mine. After that they started to rust. I ended up jet hot coating them. Still look good after 2 years. Only problem is the "Cast Iron" color they used is more like battleship grey. Look good, but don't look like bare cast iron.

Just to throw another coating out there along with the Eastwood stuff... POR15 makes a manifold gray coating also.

Typically POR bonds best to rust coated surfaces and every product I've used from them has performed beyond my expectations.

I did '57 Corvette ram's horns with Eastwood's "Factory Gray" coating after blasting them clean (and coated them immediately), and they still looked great with no touch-up required six years later. Prep is the key.

Like JohnZ, I too used this Eastwood "Factory Gray" High Temp Coating, but I did them right after I blasted them. I did this 6 months ago and they are sitting in the garage open to the air and usual moisture. So far, they look like I just did them yesterday.

I also used Eastwood's coating, about 4 year's ago. Still look pretty good(very slight surface rust), but my prep-work wasn't that great at the time. :clonk: Now that I have a blast cabinet, I'm going to redo them.
