Guys - just wanted to let yall know about something Im working on. I took a non-working 68 AM radio and am making it into a 'commander' center. I've refurbished the outside, got the scratches out of the dial window, repainted etc etc. I've removed the electronics from it and repaired the internal mchanical workings. Here's where it gets good:
I took the power / volume switch apart and reworked it. It is now an On/On switch, which will not only turn on the AM radios light, but also turn on the CD player located elsewhere. In addition, when the AM radio is turned on, it will also activate a linear actuator that drops down the removable faceplate of the CD player from behind the dash. When the AM radio is turned in the normal 'off' position, it actually reverses the drop down face plate, and retracts it. So basically, turn on the AM radio, the CD player turns on, the AM appears to be on (light) and the CD players face plate becomes visible. Turn the AM radio 'off" and the CD player turns off, as well as the face plate retracts.
Here's the other part of the 'command center' - one of the push button presets will activate a modern on/off switch to act as the kill switch (havent decided which way I want to 'kill' it yet, neutral safety / coil etc. The other remaining buttons are still up in the air. May not use them, but they could be used for a momentary switch or push button on/off.
Anyway, I just wanted to share to get some feedback from yall. I've been thinking about it for quite a while and finally got the on/off switch modified to work correctly. The rest should be a breaze - now to just finish the dang bodywork.
I've got some pics of the work so far, if anyone's interested. The thought also occured to me that if/when this works out right, I might launch a little side business doing it. Kinda neat if you ask me.

Great mids think alike! I just picked up a non-functional AM with the same idea. I have yet to take it apart, but I was planning on running the power knob as an ON/OFF switch to the CD player, just as you have. Can you pass along or post your pics??

Also, my plastic console is busted out around the tuner knob, presumably from an earlier radio stealing session. Anyone have any ideas how to cover up or fix??

You betcha - I don't have pics of the inner workings of the switch and how I changed it, but for what you want to do, it will work fine. The addition I made was to also control the linear actuator. I do have some pics of the inside, and some things I did. When I get home, I'll post them for you. I have a diagram I drew of the switch on power point I can post as well. Or.... you could mail me your radio and 50 bucks and I'll do it for you (just KIDDING, this isn't an ad! lol)

Here are some pics - might help someone if they are trying to reassemble a push button radio. Doesn't show the power switch, but Im sure you can figure that out if all your doing is having it control an external CD player. I'd suggest using a relay to actually power the CD player so your not pushing a lot of power thru the 30+ year old radio switch, Im sure that was your plan.
First pic is of the push button housing:

The rear end of the push button mechanism: (you have to keep the springs and the felt's compressed in order to reinstall the in the housing, having only two hands and 5 springs to compress, I used a rubber band)

Back in the housing:

I can take more pics and throw up the diagram for the dial if anyone wants to see it. Not sure if theres any particular interest in this or not.

Well, not sure if I can put the CD player exactly where I want to:
Plan A: CD player head under the driver seat unit with CD changer in the trunk. The removeable face plate will be removed and have and extension cable wired from the head unit to the faceplate, which will then be mounted on a flip down panel at the bottom edge of the dash, straight below the radio / ash tray. (gotta make sure there is room for it to swing out between the dash and console).
OR
Plan B: (if the head unit wont fit under the seat) Put a tape deck head unit (cheaper) in the trunk or glove box with a CD changer in the trunk. Same thing will be done with the faceplate.

Id rather stick with the CD head unit, because when the faceplate is removed, it will be less of a useless hole in the face (where the CD would normally pass) than with a tape deck unit. If I can go with plan A, I can slide the disc into the head unit thats under the seat and/or use the CD changer in the trunk.
A picture paints a thousand words huh? lol. Sadly, it will probably be a while before I can do the actual install of the CD player, since my camaro is still on its side having body work done to it. Just wanted to see what yall thought.

Thanks guys - probably a bit premature for the post, but I was pretty happy that I was able to rewire the switch to work the way I need it to, so thought I'd share. So, in 8 months, maybe I'll have it working lol, after I get the car put back together. Maybe thats why my project is taking forever, all my 'bright ideas' are getting in the way.....
gotta go finish ripping up the kitchen floor so I can put tiles down for new years weekend :)
