I have a crate motor and i just pulled the number off.

Rear of Block

GM 05 10066036

In front of Heads.

1M0708
5VP

I was able to pull the 10066036 from mortecs site. Just curious what the 05
and the 1M0708 5VP means. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
68camrs.

The '05' by the casting is a core code.

The suffix from the front pad is;
1 = 1981
M = Mexico engine assembly plant
07 = July or 'Julio' if you prefer :)
08 = 8th or 'octavo'...
5VP = TargetMaster 350 engine assembly

Hope this helps;
John

Thanks for the quick response.
Any opinion on this motor? Anything to watch for during the warrenty period? It was installed as a weekend driver, not for performance.
How can i tell if it is the 2 or 4 bolt main. And just more curiosity, what does the 2 piece rear seal mean.
2 or 4...Target Master/Goodwrench crate motor, 2-piece rear
seal, "Hecho en Mexico"
Thanks again. Sorry for any dumb questions. 68camrs.

I can't think of to many "dumb questions" - but, I've given a few 'dumb answers'... :D

No real opinions about that particlular motor or even the block, because I haven't seen it...
There is nothing inherently wrong with the 'Mexican Motors' - not any different in overall quality that most US production blocks in my experience.
Any stock block can have what was an acceptable amount of core sift or other abnormalities in stock form that would preclude it's use in High performance engine builds - it's really a case-by-case decission based on testing and reviewing a given core.
If the shop chose to inspect, build and then offer a warranty on that engine, then I'm sure they though it was a good block core.

I would just treat the motor as any new motor. Go through the proper, or required by the supplier, break-in procedures and then monitor the engine fluids for a while until your satisfied all seems right.
You can look for common signs of problems, such as water in oil or vis-versa, and also have the oil analyzed the first couple changes to look for abnormal wear.

"How can i tell if it is the 2 or 4 bolt main"?
I haven't come across a TargetMaster/Mr.Goodwrench with a mexican block yet that isn't, so I would bet it is a 4-bolt.
Shops building performance crate motors normally try to sellect these 4-bolt cores as a base, this makes for good advertising print too...

"And just more curiosity, what does the 2 piece rear seal mean" ?
It's means just that - the Rear Main Seal assembly is made up of two(2) seperate pieces, a top half and a bottom half. Each half is installed in the rear main area as the engine is assembled. These require the oil pan and the rear main bearing shell to be removed to replace them.
Latter SB/BB's now have a "One-piece" seal - it's a single circular seal that is installed from the rear of the engine after assembly. These require the transmission to be removed to access the seal.

"Hecho en Mexico" sing along with me now - "from south of the border - down Mexico way..." :D
This obviously means the engine is from mexico - I have one based on this block also, it's been a fine engine...

Hope this helps;
John
